Here we share with you the amazing work and initiatives that are happening across the Health and Life Sciences cluster in Liverpool City Region. In the Liverpool City Region, this cluster continues to push forward with research and innovation front and centre and we continue to showcase what we have to offer. 
Updates
Thrive, a Research England-funded initiative to co-develop a new model for research teams, is hosting a series of workshops this month and next month.Led by the University of Liverpool, the initiative aims to encourage more inclusive and diverse team working and will be piloted through a live funding call with the Arts and Humanities Research Council in 2024. Research England has awarded £9.8 million to the Centre for Drugs and Diagnostics (CDD) at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine to train the next generation of leaders in infectious disease research. The CDD will use the funding to expand the breadth and depth of its research portfolio over five years through investment in creating a skilled workforce, particularly Early Career Researchers. The Pandemic Institute has awarded almost £700k across four projects aimed at better preparing the world for future pandemics. The funding will be used to employ key research or technical staff who will carry out a range of pandemic preparedness projects, and be ready to pivot to respond rapidly against any new threat that arises. During December 2023, Alder Hey Emergency Department was ranked second nationally regarding waiting times, seeing and treating 85% of our Children and Young people within four hours of their arrival. Alder Hey also recently received a prestigious Centre of Excellence award from leading national charity Muscular Dystrophy UK.
A diabetic’s mission to remove artificial sweeteners from soft drinks is being backed with a £440,000 loan from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s Flexible Growth Fund. The investment will enable the Aintree-based Happy Drinks Company to create 24 jobs as it expands its bottling and manufacturing capabilities to meet rapidly growing demand. Read more here
The Trust’s new Innovation Manager has a vision to make The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre a world leader in healthcare innovation. Simon Bunting joins CCC and brings with him 22 years NHS experience working in both primary and secondary care and has led and delivered a number of innovative projects during that time. Hugh Baird College is excited to announce the launch of its After School Healthcare Academy, specifically designed for Year 11 students with a keen interest in Health and Social Care. Read more here
LYVA Labs plans to run and manage local accelerator/ incubator programmes during 2024. The team has published a survey to give them insights into the support businesses need from incubators and accelerators. Find out more here

New service to support business with supply chains and procurement
Growth Platform are pleased to announce a new service designed to help Liverpool City Region businesses with supply chain and procurement procedures. 

Navigating supply chain activity and finding the right opportunities for you can be complicated. To help you on your journey we have developed a toolkit to provide you with valuable insights, best practice and practical tools to enhance your procurement activities.

We are currently developing some Masterclasses to increase the capability of business understanding of how to effectively compete when tendering for new business opportunities. We expect these to be available in the Spring to register your interest click here.

The University of Liverpool Growth Catalyst Programme
Growth Catalyst is a seven-month leadership development programme, which includes a 2-day leadership residential, business coaching, a series of masterclass talks, online skills workshops, peer support groups and a business shadowing exercise, all underpinned by a network of likeminded individuals, keen to grow their businesses in an atmosphere of mutual support and trust. Developed by experts in the field of leadership and management, Growth Catalyst employs an integrated delivery model, aimed at improving the performance of the business and the personal development and confidence of the owner/manager. 

There is no charge for attending the programme, however there is an application and selection process, to ensure that places are awarded to businesses that have plans for growth and are committed to meaningful change.

Help to Grow: Management Programme
Recruitment is open for the next cohort of the Help to Grow Management programme at the University of Liverpool Management School, starting on 7 March 2024.

The 12-week programme, which combines online sessions with face-to-face learning, is 90% funded by the Government and has been designed to allow participants to complete it alongside full-time work.

Make a difference as a Service User Representative
Have you or a family member used mental health services? Apply to become a Service User Representative with the Mental Health Research for Innovation Centre (M-RIC) and your voice could help shape future research so care and treatments can be improved. 

Service User Representatives will provide invaluable support to M-RIC’s research teams in Liverpool by sharing their experiences and insights. No previous experience of research is needed. You just need some time to spare and the drive and enthusiasm to get involved and help make a difference to the future of mental healthcare. Find out more here

R&D Partnership Fund Net Zero Call
LYVA Labs have launched the next funding call round for the R&D Partnership Fund, this time focussed on Net Zero innovation. Are you an established Liverpool City Region business that has a new product or technology idea for Net Zero applications? LYVA Labs are awarding grant funds to foster new R&D partnerships and help develop innovative new products and services towards commercialisation

Funding for early stage development of new healthcare interventions
Apply for funding to the Developmental Pathway Gap Fund (DPGF), to generate critical preliminary data to build confidence in the development strategy for a new medicine, medical device, diagnostic test, or other medical intervention development.

You must be based at a research organisation eligible for Medical Research Council (MRC) funding.

Needle free medicines delivery technologies: Feasibility studies
UK registered businesses can apply for a share of up to £1 million for feasibility studies. These will be to support the development and manufacturing of needle free technologies to administer medicines.
