BBC acts over Apprentice contestant who made antisemitic remarks, following Board of Deputies letter

Following antisemitic remarks by Apprentice contestant Asif Munaf, the BBC confirmed yesterday in a letter to Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl that they had deleted content featuring him from The Apprentice - You're Fired, scheduled to be broadcast this evening.

Our comment: "Following the Board of Deputies President's urgent letter to the BBC Director-General Tim Davie and the BBC Chairman this morning, we have been notified that the BBC has significantly edited all content relating to BBC 2's You're Fired concerning Asif Munaf. Labour 'made the right decision' to withdraw support from Rochdale candidate Azhar Ali

The Board of Deputies this week backed Labour's decision to withdraw support from its prospective parliamentary candidate for Rochdale, Azhar Ali, following his antisemitic remarks at a meeting.

Our comment: "Any party with a genuine dedication to fighting bigotry cannot support candidates espousing vile conspiracy theories. Labour have made the right decision in withdrawing support for Mr Ali."

The Board of Deputies had previously rejected Azhar Ali's apology: “It is clear to us that Mr Ali is not apologising out of a genuine sense of remorse. Despite what he says in his apology, we do not see how we could possibly engage with him at this time, and we believe other leading Jewish communal groups will feel similarly.”
