Luncheon celebrates Black History Month

Join the UTM Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Office for a community gathering and lunch on Feb. 28 from noon to 2 p.m. in Maanjiwe nendamowinan (MN) 6128. It will be an opportunity to engage in disrupting narratives about what Black history means and recognize the powerful influences of Black individuals and communities across the country and beyond.
The gathering will include an Afro-Caribbean lunch and group viewing of Michaëlle Jean's keynote address from the 22nd annual Black History Month Luncheon hosted by the Department of University Advancement and Hart House. All UTM students, staff, faculty and librarians are welcome. Register at https://uoft.me/EDIOBHM2024.

Are you practicing safe downloading?
Mobile apps, including social media platforms, that gather and share users' private information may raise privacy and security concerns. Here are some tips to help you use apps securely on both personal and university-owned mobile devices: 
  • Check for known privacy and security concerns associated with the apps before downloading them. 
  • Get familiar with the apps’ data collection and sharing policies. 
  • Be mindful of the permissions you are granting to the apps.

Voting now open for committees

Voting for two administrative staff seats on the UTM Campus Affairs and Academic Affairs Committees is now open and will end on Friday, Feb.16 at 5 p.m. Read more

Crane will divert pedestrians near Davis
As part of the Spiegel Hall kitchen renovation, there will be a crane parked at the end of the Five Minute Walk near W.G. Davis Building on Feb. 20
Pedestrians will be diverted to another entrance. The nearest accessible entrances will be at the main entrance at Inner Circle Road or near the CCT Building.
Within W.G. Davis Building, the exit near DV2079 (leading to Meeting Place) and DV2063 (in Research Wing) will be blocked, with signage to redirect users to other available exits. In the event of an emergency, all exit doors can be used.
Help identify staff excellence 
Nominations are now open for the 2023-2024 UTM Staff Awards. 
The criteria for the Principal’s Service Award for Excellence and the Principal’s Staff Awards, as well as the steps to follow in submitting a nomination, can be found on the Staff Awards & Recognition website. Nominations close March 15.

Indigenous entrepreneurs wanted
The iCUBE Indigenous Entrepreneurship Program will host a 14-week program in March. Commitment is approximately three to six hours per week.
The program is being offered in collaboration with Redbird Circle Inc., which merges traditional knowledge with modern business strategies. Applications are due March 4Learn More
Journal showcases first-year students
The new issue of Writing for University and Beyond: A Journal of First-Year Student Writing at UTM is now availableThis journal showcases papers written by students enrolled in Basics of Writing in English, a non-credit course designed to help students develop and communicate their ideas in writing and develop critical thinking skills necessary for university studies and research. T4s available soon

T4 and T4A forms for the 2023 tax year will be available online via Employee Self-Service (ESS) for all active University of Toronto employees on Feb. 27. 

Apply now for Pitch with a Twist 
This competition features women-identifying participants pitching to women-identifying judges. The March 6 event, which also includes guest speakers and networking opportunities, showcases both innovative business ideas and early-stage startups, with $10,000 in cash prizes.
All ideators or early-stage startups that align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals are invited to apply. Applications are open until Feb. 20. Read more
