Book Love is in the Air!

Wowza! January's Dream Big was a blast, and guess what? The fun isn't over yet! We are getting ready for a month of exciting events at our Family Space, starting with the "I 'Heart' Books" bash this Saturday, February 10th! That's just a tiny sneak peek of what's in store. Pre-K Enrollment is Now Open!

A Message from Our School and Family Engagement Team

Families,

Applications for Durham PreK are now open! Research shows that play-based learning is an effective way for children to learn, to prepare them for kindergarten, and to develop their social-emotional skills. Durham PreK is open to any 4-year-old in Durham County. Children enrolling for the 2024-2025 school year must turn 4 by August 31st, 2024. The universal application and parent information sessions can be found on the Durham PreK’s website. These sessions will provide more context for families and address questions about DPS placement. Stories from the Start: Storytime for Babies

February 8,15,29

Book Harvest Family Space

Stories from the Start is a bilingual (English/Spanish) storytime for 0-2 year olds with songs/music, nursery rhymes, & movement activity. Families will also have the opportunity to use the Family Space freely before and after the storytime, including choosing books for their children to take home and keep.

Balls & Ramps Kids' STEM Pop-Up Day with The Wonder Lab

February 16 10am-4pm

Book Harvest Family Space

Pop into the Family Space for a Fun Day of Pop-Up STEM Stations by The Wonder Lab!

Come explore force and motion as we get busy experimenting with balls and ramps!

Observe how the height of a ramp affects the speed and distance the ball will roll, test out different kinds of balls made out of a variety of materials, experiment with curved pathways on ramps, and use big cardboard tubes to build your own ramp course!

Story Stitch: Kids’ Sewing & Storytime

February 17 11am-1pm

Embark on a journey of imagination and innovation with Story Stitch!

Our unique program seamlessly weaves together the magic of storytelling, the art of crafting, and a deep connection to community issues.

Featured Story: Ali and the Sea Stars by Ali Stroke

Stitch Project: Hand-Stitched Character Puppets (participants will be using real needles, and parents will be asked to sign a waiver at arrival, plastic needles will be available for younger participants)

For Ages 5-12 years!

Science Storytime with the Museum of Life & Science

February 22nd 3:30pm-4:30pm

Book Harvest Family Space

Join Book Harvest & Museum of Life and Science for a Bilingual storytime!

This storytime will feature a story about Friendship & Kindness, followed by a science activity all about the Community, Kindness & Climate!

Families will also have time to enjoy Book Harvest's Family Space and pick FREE books from our shelves to take home FOREVER!

Building Bridges

February 17 10am-12pm

Club Blvd. Elementary School

Join Book Harvest and friends for an open community conversation and multigenerational panel discussion about Durham's historic role in school integration and how we can lead on efforts to transform our school communities, particularly in demanding that our children's constitutional rights be defended. Childcare, lunch, and interpretation services will be provided to ensure that everyone can participate fully!

Strengths-Based Approach to Self-Regulation

February 20 6:30pm-8:00pm

Hill Learning Center

Explore our sensory preferences and those of our children and use that information to better respond to and support their needs throughout the day. This event is great for those supporting students of any age!
