Message from Sue Coleman, Co-President

Hello Leaguers!

We have an exciting month planned for our community. I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at 7:00 pm at Lake Park East Auditorium for our School District Consolidation Study - Community Event. Major thanks to Donna Limper and her team for leading this year-long study. We've shared several times that we need all hands on deck for this important event so please come and arrive well before 7 pm.  Review the study and be familiar with our recommendation that all five Lake Park High School feeder elementary school boards jointly commission an expert report to determine the financial impact of consolidating district administrations. This can be done at NO cost to the districts.

I also want to thank Susan Wakefield Dal Porto who is leading our Home Rule for Roselle community event at 7 pm on Thursday, February 29 at the Roselle Public Library. What does home rule do? What is the impact on taxes? Does Roselle need home rule? Please save that date and attend to learn more.

Please wear your League button(s) to both these events so we are easily identifiable to the public.

In League, Sue Coleman

PS: If you are not getting regular emails from the LWVIL, use this link to add yourself to the distribution list.

Roselle Home Rule Discussion
In the March 19, 2024 election, voters will have an opportunity to vote on the very important question of whether the Village of Roselle should become a Home Rule entity.  Be an informed voter by participating in an in-depth discussion of "Why Home Rule?" on Thursday, February 29, 2024 from 7:00 - 8:30 PM at the Roselle Public Library  Attend this discussion and learn what Home Rule does, how communities all around us who have Home Rule have used it, and how it might affect your taxes. Presenters include Roselle Trustee, Tom Della Penna, Bloomingdale City Manager, Peter Scalera, and Hanover Park Mayor, Rodney Craig.  There will be an opportunity for your questions.

Reclaiming My Humanity: A Reflective Journey to Finding Purpose
We are thrilled to join LWV Arlington Heights for an amazing evening of purpose with Dr. Michael Allen, a recent Principal of the Year and Crain's Chicago Business Notable Black Leader and Executive, as he coaches parents, caregivers, and our community to cultivate humanity so we can better cherish ourselves and others. It will be held on Wednesday, February 21, 7:00-8:30 pm at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, Hendrickson Room. The event is limited to 80 registered participants for this workshop conversation-style evening.

Dr. Turner's Obituary
Last week, we shared LWVUS President Dr. Deborah Turner died Sunday, January 28, 2024, after a brief illness. Read Dr. Turner's obituary here: https://www.colonialchapels.com/obituaries/Deborah-Turner-15/#!/PhotosVideos  A memorial fund is being established in her honor and LWVUS has posted a blog of inspiring quotes from Dr.Turner: https://www.lwv.org/blog/inspiration-late-lwv-president-dr-deborah-ann-turner

There is a wonderful video clip of Dr. Turner singing; Dr. Turner loved to sing: https://youtube.com/shorts/ancVxjQI1PM?si=u5KSySPJuxgygBQ5  Dr.Turner had just finished recording her 'State of the League' address, which will be shared later.

Sania Irwin (LWV Glen Ellyn), formerly LWVUS 1st Vice President, is now League of Women Voters President, and Dianna Wynn (LWV North Carolina and our national board liaison for Illinois) is serving as Vice President. The national board is very strong, and the board members will keep the League moving forward.
