St. Patrick's News Briefly

A. Just Happened
B. Happening Now
C. About to Happen

A. Just Happened:
 1. Nomadic Shelter again served a contingent of guests from The Redwood Gospel Mission. Thanks to the volunteers!
 2. ReStart bins delivered to St. Patrick's to be stored until they are needed for victims of a flood or fire. Bins were also delivered to St. Stephen's Sebastopol  and Holy Trinity Ukiah. This is a Diocesan wide disaster response project made possible by coordination in each Deanery. Thanks to Mindy Braun and Fr. Ed for making the deliveries.

 3. Congregation from around the Diocese sent in names and emails for Clergy Vesttries and others who will be sent a survey in a few weeks called Racial Justice Audit. This survey and a previous survey sent to Diocesan Leaders will be used to chart future actions by the Episcopal Church to increase understanding of how different ethnic and racial populations are served or not served by the Church. The church has mandated training in anti racism for years, but more actual action is needed to lessen the impact of personal and institutional racism.
 4. Several members of St. Patrick's just completed a retreat at Bishop's Ranch presented by Sharron Simpson called Wellspring. This retreat echoed the contemplative program Sharron gives every Friday at St. Patrick's. See more below - a photo.

B. Happening Now:
 1. A Vestry Orientation and workshop is taking place tomorrow, Saturday February 10th. The new vestry members will work with the continuing members getting to know each other and look at the future challenges. One important consideration will be the transition from Fr. Ed as Priest-in-charge to the Rev. Carol Luther as long term supply priest beginning April 1st. The vestry will discuss how many of the administrative necessities will be accomplished. All members of St. Patrick's can expect to be asked for help.
 2. Year-end reports are being assembled to be sent to the office of the Bishop and to the National Church , most significant being the annual parochial report. That document tells all about membership, worship, attendance, finances and ministry initiatives and accomplishments during the past year. Featured for the past several years has been the work of the "Becoming Beloved Community" project with the local schools, headed up by Laurie Boone-Hogan. See more below.

C. About to Happen:
 1. Shrove Tuesday pancake supper set for this coming Tuesday, February 13th beginning at 5:30pm. We will also burn some of last year's palms to make ashes for Ash Wednesday. Thank you, Ron Keith for organizing the pancakes. Remember this also Mardi Gras, so remember your beads.
 2. Ash Wednesday, this next Wednesday, February 14. Ash Wednesday liturgy with communion and ashes will be at 10AM and 5PM.
 3. Stations of the Cross. The stations will be put up in the windows of the church again for use by anyone, anytime, but particularly following the 10AM Wednesday Eucharist and Healing, beginning this Wednesday. There are stations booklets available.

 4. On Saturday, March 16th the Congregational Development office of the Diocese is hosting a zoom presentation "Vestry Essentials." See the flyer here in the Grapevine. This is an important meeting for our vestry, in particular the new members. Anyone reading this Grapevine should consider subscribing to the Diocesan News - communications@norcalepiscopal.org
 5. The next regular Vestry meeting is on Wednesday, February 21st. The Vestry will approve the parochial report and make other necessary decisions which come out of their workshop on February 10th.
 6. The clergy of the Russian River Deanery will meet at St. Paul's Healdsburg on Thursday, February 29th. The Wardens of churches who do not have a regular clergy person are also part of that meeting called Clericus. Fr. Ed, as Dean, leads the Clerics gatherings.
 7. Looking further ahead:
On Saturday, March 9th St. Patrick's will host a memorial service for Bruce Marts. He and his family have been part of St. Patrick's for years.
On Sunday, March 17th St. Patrick's will host a memorial service and burial of ashes in the Memorial Garden for Carol Gwatkin.
Palm Sunday is March 24th and Easter Sunday is March 31st.

NOMADIC SHELTER REPORT,
          February 2024

Saturday, February 3 we welcomed 15 Nomadic Shelter guests from Redwood Gospel Mission to St. Patrick’s for an overnight stay and a hot meal.  We had 10 volunteers to help set up, serve the meal, dine with guests, and clean up.  Two staff members from RGM arrived with the guests and later two different staff replaced them.  They all left at 6 a.m., leaving Stevenson Hall clean and ready.
Instead of cooking the meal at church, three casseroles, all the same recipe, were prepared in three different homes:  Matt and Marilyn Ganz, Chuck and Sally Wood, and Rich and Betsy Randolph made the pasta with spinach and ground beef casserole.  It was a hearty, tasty hot meal that the guests really appreciated on a cold, rainy night.
Setting up Stevenson Hall were Eleanor Albon, Heather Nicoll, and Carol Luther.  They also helped serve the meal, along with Dakota Borgfeldt, Karen Borgfeldt, Merle Holtzen, Bernadette Gibb, Rich and Betsy Randolph, Alec Peters, Laddie Watson, and Beth Lewis.
Behind the scenes was Diana Estabrook, whose dentist donated toothbrushes and toothpaste, and packages of popcorn.  Sandy Keith contributed some delicious peanut butter cookies, and some appetizers were the work of Bernadette Gibb.  Karen Borgfeldt had small gifts to add to the “goodie bags,” including some clever little washcloths that are the size of a mint and expand in water.  She offered wonderful hot towels, welcome finales.
Exact figures will follow later but it seems we spent about $120.00 on the meal for 30 people.
If you’re interested in helping at the next Nomadic Shelter on March 2, please contact Betsy Randolph at (408)981-2024 or at rjurny@gmail.com.
There are other ways you can help. Please save your toiletries from hotel stays;  they were very popular.  You can offer cheese and salami as appetizers.  Homemade cookies are always welcome.  If you have other ideas, please contact Betsy.

FIELD TRIP TO SONOMA VALLEY MUSEUM OF ART

Field Trip to the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art
To see
Tsherin Sherpa’s Different Worlds
On Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at 1 P.M.

This exhibition presents the captivating artworks of Tsherin Sherpa, a masterful contemporary California artist whose creations seamlessly merge traditional and modern aesthetics. Born in Kathmandu, Nepal, Sherpa emigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1998. His work is grounded in his personal experiences within the Himalayan Diaspora and rigorous training as a thangka painter. (traditional Tibetan Buddhist art). Upon relocating to the United States, Sherpa developed a distinct artistic practice blending his traditional training and culture with contemporary perspectives, bridging Eastern and Western aesthetics. (SVMA program leaflet.)

Sponsored by the Education Ministry of St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, this museum field trip is free and promises to be a wonderful and informative experience led by Docent Dennis McCaffrey. A donation to the Museum is always appreciated!

Please reserve a spot by calling the Church office at 707-833-4228. Please meet at Sonoma Valley Museum of Art at 551 Broadway, Sonoma. For questions, contact Lauriehogen@gmail.com.

Becoming A Beloved Community - Schools

BUILDING LIBRARY COLLECTIONS TO INCLUDE RESPECT, UNDERSTANDING OF CULTURES AND DIVERSITY WHILE ENHANCING COMPASSION AND SOCIAL JUSTICE

Join this special opportunity to provide books for the libraries at El Verano School and Kenwood School! Stories from diverse cultures and ethnic backgrounds as well as biographies of ordinary citizens doing extraordinary work to make a difference in our American society. Titles such as “All are Welcome Here”, “Ordinary People Change the World”, “I am....Muhammad Ali, ...Marie Curie”, “Chocolate Milk, Por Favor: Celebrating Diversity with Empathy” and many more will update the collections in both schools.

Here is how you can participate: Each donation of $15 buys one book; $30 provides 2 books and so on with a discount of 7 books for $100. Each donor will receive a receipt and the titles of the books purchased. Our goal is to provide at least 50 books by March 1 so that the schools will celebrate “Read Across America” on March 4 with many new books to read!

Any amount is greatly appreciated! Please send a check, noting in the memo, “BBC-Schools Books” and the number of books to be funded, to St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 247, Kenwood, California 95452. St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church is a 501(C3) entity.

Thank you so very much!

When was the last time someone stopped everything to listened to you? They put down their phones, turned off the T.V., turned their bodies towards you, and listened intently to you? Listening is world altering gift. If you have the gift of listening I am asking you to join a Regional Discernment Group (RDG). We especially need people in the Russian River Deanery and Capital Deanery to join RDGs. We need people who are willing to listen and discern people’s calling. Deep listening acts as a mirror to help people see themselves and one of the greatest gifts you can give.

Please sign up here for the training on March 2nd.

Please contact The Rev. Anny Genato, pastoranny@staugustineepiscopal.com, if you have any questions.

For complete extended diocesan news please contact communications@norcalepiscopal.org
This will allow you to subscribe to the Diocesan ENews. Which will be emailed to you weekly once you have subscribed. The Grapevine will some diocesan news, but you'll get much more by subscribing to the ENews.

Food Donations Needed
F.I.S.H. of Santa Rosa

IMPORTANT CHANGE

F.I.S.H’s current twice-a-month family distribution system is neither financially nor physically sustainable. Due to a dramatic increase in demand, our volunteers are overwhelmed, and we are dealing with an extreme decrease in donations. For these reasons, F.I.S.H. has reverted to a once-a-month policy as of January 01, 2024. This means that our clients will be able to receive 2 bags of groceries, ONCE a month.

To volunteer and donate, please go to our WEBSITE

About us:
ln 2023 F.I.S.H. served an average of 4,976 people per month, and historically approximately 35% of those helped are children. The number of people asking for assistance from FISH has increased dramatically since 2022. F.I.S.H is currently open five days per week to offer food to people in need - including seniors, homeless, unemployed, low-income, disabled, and  more...Your donations feed many.

Spread the LOVE!

Our friends at F.I.S.H. of Santa Rosa would like our help with peanut butter donations!  If you would like to bring in jars of peanut butter to help fulfill their needs to keep serving those in need. You can also bring canned soup and other food non-perishable items. Peanut butter is their greatest need at this time. You are welcome to bring other canned food and baby diapers!
Drop off your donations in the basket located in the Narthex.
We thank you for all your help!
