Volunteer Spotlight

This month, we are recognizing a wonderful member of our volunteer team - Meet Leigh!

We have been so fortunate to have Leigh a part of the EOI human herd for the last three years. She loves being of service to horses and considers herself a jack of all trades & a master of none, in that we work as a village, combining our various skill sets and experience to best care for the herd. Leigh came to us with almost 40 years experience as a paramedic and flight/emergency nurse which has equipped her with problem solving skills under pressure and extensive medical knowledge that she now gets to apply to horses as she listens to their hearts, lungs, and bowel sounds through a stethoscope.

At EOI, Leigh fills many roles, from feeder to grain prepper, to mucker and groomer. She also does inventory and assists with ordering of feed, supplements, and medications. She has been very involved in our Emergency Evacuation planning, and is also a foster liaison - the main line of communication between EOI and our foster families when they need us. Stemming from her years of Emergency Medical Services work where efficiency & safety were dependent on having supplies and knowing where they were, Leigh also helps keep us organized and ensures things are labeled - reducing the chaos for us in caring for many horses with differing dietary and medical needs.

While Leigh will tell you that all of EOI’s horses are her favorite, she shares a special bond with Maggie - a bright red sorrel quarterhorse with white socks pictured above. She has Wobblers, a progressive neurological condition due to compression of her spinal cord. Maggie is 18 years young but cannot be ridden and requires special care to prevent injuries to herself and others due to her fall risk. Leigh loves Maggie’s sweet nature and spunkiness, and that she acts like she is without affliction. Maggie gets very attached to some of the other horses and is beautiful, Leigh believes, inside and out.

Volunteering at EOI gives Leigh the opportunity to learn something new every day and inspires her artwork - she’s a painter, too, and her favorite subject is horses.
