Suicide Prevention Update

The Perth Metropolitan Suicide Prevention Coordinators assist in the delivery of the Mental Health Commissions’ Suicide Prevention 2025 Framework. Our role is to build community capacity to prevent and respond to suicide through awareness, education & training, partnerships and events. We work with community groups, organisations and interagency networks to build safety and support.

The Perth Metropolitan Suicide Prevention Coordinators do not provide a crisis services or interventions for consumers.

What's been happening

RightByYou Website Update
 
At the time of writing the rightbyyou.org.au website had 17,000 individual visits. During the December/January school holidays the website had over 4000 visits. In preparation for the return to school and university, SPC increased its promotional spend for February resulting in 2000 visits in 2 weeks. The number one source of visitors is Snapchat. In 2024 the SPC team will continue to deliver workshops to talk about the site and promote the website at community events.
 
SPC East Update
 
Aftercare Presentation to EMHS Social Work Staff - February 6 
Coordinated an Aftercare Professional Development session based on the Aftercare Support for Suicide and Self-Harm Booklet, for Social workers from Royal Perth Hospital, Bentley Hospital and Midland Hospital. Over 30+ attended online and 10+ in-person, with service presentations from Neami National, Peer Pathways (CoMHWA), Derbarl Yerrigan and The Luminos Project (Ruah/Samaritans WA).
 
 
 
Grief and Loss Group at Langford Aboriginal Association - February 12
Supported Derbarl Yerrigan’s first Grief and Loss Group at Langford Aboriginal Association. This group will provide a supportive space for individuals and families from Aboriginal communities dealing with grief. On every Monday at 10:30am-12pm at Langford Aboriginal Association - SPC East will continue to support this group for the next month.
 
 
SPC Metro Update

Right By You Website 1-Year Review Workshop - February 14 
Held an online workshop with 15 RBY Youth ambassadors and other key stakeholders, for the 1-year review of the RBY website. Lots of great feedback was collated, and we are looking forward to finalising the amendments for the updated website in April.
 
Safer Internet Day Poster sent out to 100+ stakeholders
Tailored Poster sent out on most current best-practice online Suicide Prevention information including Mindframe training, #chatsafe, eSaftey reporting online and safe language.
 

 

Suicide Prevention in Disability Forum - February 15
AIHW 2023 data showed us that those aged under 65 years, who used disability services between 1 July 2013 to 30 June 2018, died by suicide at a rate three times greater than the general population of the same age. As a response to this, SPC held their first forum of the year on the intersection of suicide prevention in disability, where attendees got to hear from Youth Disability Advocacy Network, CareersWA, PWDWA and Wesley Mission. This was a sold-out forum, with 30 stakeholders attending the session.

PaRK Suicide Prevention Collaborative – End of Year Wrap Up
In December 2023, the PaRK Suicide Prevention Collaborative celebrated our successes of the last 6 months. This includes PaRK being presented at the LGA Conference, running 2 World Suicide Prevention Day events, supporting multiple local community events in PaRK Region, participating in the UWA Chat Survey on Collaborative Leadership and maintaining a membership list of over 30 members. South SPC Amy is so grateful to chair this network alongside Sam from Roses in the Ocean and Chris from Wesley LifeForce.
 
 
Youth Wellbeing Festival
SPC supported and attended the Freo Youth wellbeing festival just before Christmas alongside City of Freo & Headspace Freo. It was a fabulous afternoon with over 150 young people and families participating in Parkour Workshops, Freestyle BMX coaching sessions and accessing mental health resources.
 
Ride & Roll Skatepark Series
This January SPC have sponsored a stakepark collaboration between The City of Mandarah, City of Cockburn, City of Kwinana and City of Rockingham. This Ride & Roll Skatepark Series brings together young people from 10- 25 years to compete in friendly competition. The final will be held on the 24th of February.
 
SPC North Update

Children's Art Therapy Workshops
 SPC started off 2024 supporting children and families in Nollamara with 6 Art Therapy Workshops during the school holidays delivered by Pharmacy 777. All sessions booked out after being showcased in the West Austrian Newspaper Holiday Guide, and extra sessions were had to be added to keep up with demand. Art workshops also bring carers together to receive some resources that can support their personal mental health and for family members. Sessions are kept to 10 children to maximise support and interaction.
 
12 Buckets – School Holiday Activity Transition to High School
SPC supported the 12 Buckets program to bring young people to together who are transitioning from Primary to Secondary School. The group were brought together to discuss what they look forward to in high school and allow students to meet new people so they are not alone at a new school. The group received information on mental health and what supports are available to them. The group went on a outing before going to shop for school supplies.
 
E- Sports Rocket League
SPC entered the world of online tournament gaming and E-Sports. Using the Right By You message we sponsored a E-Sports Tournament with online qualifiers occurring over the weekend before an in person finals tournament with commentators and an excited crowd attended the Rechabite. The tournament attracted over a thousand people who participated and watched the events over 2 weeks.

Farewell to Danielle

SPC team is sad to say goodbye to Danielle who sends out all the requests for the training calendar and newsletter. Danielle has been a amazing team member and will be missed. We thank her for all her efforts and wish her the best on her new journey.
