Unthinkable Practices

A mother cow stands protectively over a Khal bacha, or “dummy calf”, at a dairy farm in India. Made from the stuffed and treated skin of her calf, who died two weeks earlier, the Khal bacha convinces the mother her calf is still alive so her body continues milk production. Over the last year, we’ve been working with the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organizations (FIAPO) to document various animal industries across India, from aquaculture to poultry and dairy farming.

Some of the images are startling. Today, India is the world’s largest producer of milk and is home to more than 300 million cattle and buffaloes used for milk production. Our photojournalist Sudip Maiti documented some shocking but common practices on dairy farms in the state of West Bengal.

Veganuary is Over. Now What?

Veganuary, the campaign promoting a month of “trying vegan”, is wrapping up. With the support of celebrities and a plethora of resources, Veganuary brings veganism to the mainstream every January. So, how do we sustain this energy? As animal photojournalists, we firmly believe that high-quality, poignant visuals play a key role when talking about veganism with new audiences. We’ve compiled some of our best visuals for you to use to continue the dialogue.

“Animals are imprisoned by this industry, and they can cry, scream and fight but society chooses not to see or hear them. Our task is to get their stories seen beyond the walls of farms and slaughterhouses.” - Zuzana

Zuzana Mit is a Slovakian photographer, animal advocate and author dedicated to education and awareness about animal rights and the impact of animal agriculture on the planet, animals and people. We sat down with Zuzana to learn more about her journey into animal photojournalism.

Photo of the Month: Mega-Dairy

A milk dispensing truck drives amidst thousands of calf hutches on an Arizona dairy farm. Photo credit: Ram Daya.
In this era of drone photography, Ram Daya has captured the devastating scale of Arizona's expanding dairy industry. The photo first draws us in with its unusual symmetry but we quickly realize we are looking at thousands of isolation hutches. The truck brings scale to this stark and orderly scene. We’re left with questions: What is life like in this industrial environment? What are the sounds and smells? Why are there so many hutches? Who is buying this product? What don’t we know?
