📰 Platteville 100 years ago

Did you know that you can search digitized local historical newspapers on the Library’s computers? Here’s a look at a few of our favorite headlines from the front pages of The Platteville Journal in February 1924:

  • Famous Child’s Author Passes Away: Laura Rountree Smith, author of Pixie books and other famous child stories, is called away in death Laura Rountree Smith has gone. The magic pen lies dry upon the desk. The hurrying step, the little basket, the neatly tied package has passed from our streets. “Bunny Cotton Tail” has lost his Fairy Queen. The Pixy must look for another godmother. The hustling, bustling crowd may not miss her much, but childhood stops to shed a silent tear. Laura Rountree Smith was enshrined in the hearts of children everywhere, and because they live, she shall live also. (February 27, 1924)

  • First Capitol Makes a Kick Belmont, not a large city to be sure but possessing many historical associations registers a kick at being left off a main state trunk highway. It happened through a relocation during the renumbering and re-routing connected with the addition of 2,500 miles of road to the 7,500 miles of Wisconsin state trunk highway system. Belmont, out in LaFayette Country, has a population of 500 people. The official census figure is 498, but it’s safe to say that at least two babies have been born there since the census was taken, and, once born, folks get very old out in that country of cheese and milk and pure air and fresh water. (February 13, 1924)

  • A White Mouse with Brown Eyes W. F. Schroeder found a curiosity while fanning seed one day last week. He saw something run out from the chaff and stunning it with a broom found it to be a white mouse. It was white all over except the tail and part of the ears. He says that the tame white mice have pink ears and eyes. Both in this little animal are brown. Mrs. Schroeder caged the mouse and it has been in the Steffens window for a few days for all who wish to see it. (February 27, 1924)
