Dear <<First Name>>,

I was invited by the Social Diversity for Children Foundation (SDC) to attend the SDC 2024 CURV Once Upon a Shine Gala on Saturday. I am always amazed at the work the SDC does in having young leaders empower children with needs, making sure that every child has the opportunity to learn and grow.

As a former teacher, getting to hear the motivational speeches and stories from our youth at the gala was inspiring, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for them. Thank you to the SDC for the invitation!

I also had a good time catching up and meeting new friends at the BNH South House Donor Appreciation Event last week! Our province is a huge contributor to Burnaby Neighbourhood House, as we recognize the value that they bring to our community.

The programs they provide aim to help and connect local residents, and I’m grateful to have them contribute and build a better, livelier Burnaby!

Here are some things I'd like to share with you from the past week:

B.C. launches concrete actions to keep kids safe, healthy

Kids live with different challenges today than they did a generation ago.

Cellphones, the internet and social media present risks that can harm kids.

We’re moving forward on three important actions to keep kids and young people safe from online threats, restrict cellphones in school and hold social media companies accountable.

Additional rent-bank funding will benefit more people

We know that people are feeling the impacts of high rents and inflation, and that’s making it hard for them to pay their bills and rent.

For many people in B.C., this funding can mean the difference between having a safe home or losing it.

The province is investing nearly $11 million in additional funding to BC Rent Bank to continue to help people maintain their homes in times of immediate financial need.

State-of-the-art technology enhances cancer diagnostics, research, care

Cancer patients and their families will benefit from more access to life-saving cancer diagnostics as new equipment and research expand access to PET/CT scans and innovative cancer treatments throughout the province.

By expanding clinical and research radioisotope production, this new facility will improve access to critical diagnostic tests for patients in the coming years.
  • Ensuring people in B.C. have access to PET/CT scans and world-class cancer care is a critical part of our Province’s 10-year cancer-care action plan.

B.C. strengthens quality standards for international education

The province is taking action to eliminate exploitive practices and improve the quality of post-secondary education by strengthening quality standards and bringing in new safeguards for international students in B.C.

International students come here for a good education, but too many are being exploited or taken advantage of.

That’s why we’re introducing more stringent requirements for institutions and robust safeguards to protect international students against bad actors and provide them with a better path to success.
