CARL's New Van

Canine Adoption and Rescue League~CARL was in need of a new
transport van. A van is needed in order to transport dogs to the vet and for
adoption events. The van they were using was a 2005 Toyota Sienna with
over 250,000 miles on it. Their van was pretty banged up and had a side
door that had been in a prior auto accident and was rusted over. This
made opening the door difficult. But with no funds available, we just
continued to use the van and hoped it would not break down.

Grant writer and retired public defender of over 38 years of experience,
Jean Farley came to the rescue. Jean has been a CARL volunteer for over
7 years and helped out wherever she could at the kennels and then
transitioned into grant writing for CARL. After Jean retired, she immediately
looked for an animal organization where she could volunteer and found
CARL.

Ruben Alarcon, a Biology Professor at Cal State Channel Islands is also a
CARL volunteer and prior board member. Ruben communicated to the
English Department professor who was giving a grant writing class of a
need for CARL to receive a grant. Rubin is also an animal lover and has
been instrumental in connecting the grant writers at CSUCI with Jean.
One of the students in the grant writing class was Tracy Moore. Tracy
prepared a grant for CARL and then sent it over to Jean who massaged the
wording to fit the requirements needed for the Ethel Frend Charitable
Foundation. The proposal was submitted on CARL’s behalf and they
received $3,500 to go toward the van. The grant was then submitted by
Jean Farley to The Ventura County Community Foundation and we
received another $25,000 to go to the van.

With some additional donations, CARL was able to purchase a 2017 Ford
Transit 100 cargo van just in time for the 2023 Pooch Parade and Pet
Expo. As you know, this is CARL’S biggest fundraiser and adoption event
of the year.

CARL had no funds to go toward a transport van. We could have not
purchased the van without this group effort.

Pet Food Brands Continue to Be Recalled Into 2024 for Risk of Salmonella and Listeria

Multiple pet food brands have recalled their products in 2023 and 2024 due to possible salmonella contamination. Here's what you should know.

The Gist:

  • On Nov. 9, 2023, Mid America Pet Food voluntarily recalled all the pet food brands it manufactured with the best before date of 10/31/2024, including two varieties of Member's Mark, Victor, Eagle Mountain, and Wayne Feeds.
  • Mid America Pet Food issued previous recalls on Sept. 3 and Oct. 30.
  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are investigating after seven humans have contracted salmonella potentially associated with the dog food.
  • On Jan. 4, 2024, Blue Ridge Beef expanded its recall of contaminated kitten and puppy food for possible salmonella and listeria contamination.

Choosing a dog food for your furry friend can be as meticulous as feeding yourself. Not all dogs prefer the same diets, and just like humans, dogs can have allergies or special needs that require specialized foods.

Between September and November 2023, pet food recalls from Mid America Pet Food sparked alarm in pet parents. Then, in 2024, the pet food recall expanded to include more brands and states.

Here's what to know about the recalls and potential salmonella contamination affecting humans.

In 2024, a recall of pet food brands for potential salmonella and listeria contamination was expanded.

On Jan. 3, 2024, Blue Ridge Beef expanded a previous recall of puppy and kitten food to sixteen states after the company discovered lots contaminated with salmonella and listeria, per the FDA. The previous recall began on Nov. 13, 2023, and continued through December of the same year.

The updated recall includes the following lot products:

  • Blue Ridge Beef 2-lb log of Kitten Grind UPC 8 54298 00101 6
  • Blue Ridge Beef 2-lb log of Kitten Mix UPC 8 54298 00143 6
  • Blue Ridge Beef 2-lb log of Puppy Mix UPC 8 54298 00169 6

Products were distributed between Nov. 14 and Dec. 20, 2023. A full list of distribution states and lot numbers affected is available through the FDA recall announcement. Customers are urged not to sell, consume or donate the recalled foods but to immediately dispose of them.

In 2023, multiple pet food brands issued voluntary recalls due to possible salmonella contamination.

On Sept. 3, 2023, Mid America Pet Food of Mount Pleasant, Texas, issued a recall for one lot of Victor Super Premium Dog Food for potential salmonella contamination. Then, on Oct. 30, Mid America issued a voluntary recall for three lots of Victor Super Premium Dog Food, Select Beef Meal & Brown Rice Formula after inspectors found salmonella contamination.

On Nov. 9, 2023, Mid America Pet Food issued a third voluntary recall of all the pet foods it manufactures, which includes over 25 types of dog food and six types of cat food, per USA Today.

The potentially tainted brands include Victor Super Premium Dog Food, Wayne Feeds Dog Food, Eagle Mountain Pet Food, and Member's Mark.

The FDA is working with the CDC to investigate seven human cases of salmonella potentially connected with the contaminated dog food. As of Nov. 1, 2023, the seven cases are in the following states: California, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Alabama, and Florida.

Consumers fell ill between Jan. 14, 2023, and Aug. 19, 2023. Most of the cases reported were in children one year or younger, and five reported exposure to dogs. Three of the cases also reported giving Victor pet food to their pets, as per FDA research. Only one of the victims was hospitalized, and no deaths have been reported, as per the American Veterinary Medical Association.

If you suspect that you have purchased a contaminated product, consult the full list of recalled brands and types available on the FDA website. Contaminated products will include:

  • Best buy date of 10/31/2024
  • One of three lot numbers, including 1000016890, 1000016891 or 1000016892

Is Victor Dog Food killing dogs?

As of Nov. 1, 2023, there have been no recorded instances of pet illness due to salmonella contamination, but it's important to note that pets and humans can contract salmonella infections.

The FDA also states that pets do not always display symptoms when they have salmonella. However, the symptoms are similar to those in humans: fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. If you suspect your dog has eaten contaminated food, please consult a veterinarian.

Pet guardians are urged to dispose of potentially contaminated food and wash all food bowls and storage containers with hot, soapy water.

This article, originally published on Nov. 13, 2023, has been updated to reflect the expanded recall.

Everett/Kim

It was another beautiful day in Ventura. We had our monthly dog adoption event at Marnie’s Sailor and Friends Pet Supply located at 2070 E. Main Street. Our fearless leader Toni and our transporter Christina could not join us that day. However, it takes a village and Sharon and Grace stepped up and in to serve in their absence. Also, there to pitch in were Mike, Kai, Theresa, Jose and Kathy. Our fur babies were Peaches, Patsy, Paloma, Sugar Bear, Canelo, Radish, Anubis, Maple, Loki and Everest and his foster mom Kim.  Theresa, who was fostering Canelo, traded for Raddish at the event. I am happy that Raddish got out of the sanctuary and into a home. Hopefully, he will find his forever home soon. He is such a beautiful husky. I believe Loki got adopted. Possibly Everest as well. Jose and I took Anubis to Smiling Canines located on the same property as Sailor and Friends. She almost got adopted that day.

She is such a sweetheart. They wrote on her chart that she is a “Perfect Girl”. You know that Smiling Canines provides this service at no charge for CARL dogs? That is so generous and greatly appreciated. Good health starts with good oral health and saves money down the road on dental extractions. Kathy is the leader of this task. She can be reached at 818-426-0487 if you have a foster you wish to schedule or know of a furry friend at the sanctuary in Santa Paula who would benefit from this service.

Sunday was a big day for Guero and Bolt. They made their debut at Skunkmasters along with Rusty who is in a foster home. Patty and Robert escorted Guero and Shelbie chauffeured Bolt. Rusty's foster Mom delivered him to the party. Everyone enjoyed being out. Bolt caught up on his beauty sleep and Guero greeted customers with a tail wag. A former volunteer stopped by and was interested in fostering.  Yeh. Jonlun also stopped by and helped out. Thank you to Patty, Robert, Shelbie and Jonlun.

We will be at Skunkmasters Sunday the 11th of February instead of the 4th.
