Supporting Brooklyn Center Community School's Multimedia Training and Productions

When we first reached out to the Brooklyn Center Community School (BCCS) about working with the students from the school in earlier Dec. 2023, they were very welcoming and open to the opportunity. We now work with their mostly high school aged students at two days per week, and have developed two topic tracks with the two groups.

Imagining an AAPI Cultural Corridor along the Blue Line

Preface: The METRO Blue Line Extension light rail transit project will extend the existing Blue
Line Northwest from Target Field Station to Brooklyn Park and connect communities along the way. But this is an effort 20 years in the making, a major infrastructure change with very limited involvement from Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Communities. When it comes to big issues that are important to AAPIs, transportation doesn’t always spring to mind first. Other matters such as civil rights, immigration, education, health care and small businesses have historically been at the forefront of concern.

"Understanding and Stopping Anti-Asian Hate" Series: Historical Anti-Asian Incidents (#2)

by Janie Ye, Wayzata High School

Although the COVID-19 pandemic has caused increased negative sentiment towards the AAPI community, Anti-Asian incidents in the United States date back to the 19th Century. Over the course of United States history, there have been Anti-Asian hate cases due to racism and xenophobia. In 1854 the California Supreme Court stated that Chinese Americans and immigrants could not testify against white citizens.

During World War II Japanese Americans were forced to abandon their homes and imprisoned in internment camps. A man killed 6 Asian women in an Atlanta spa in 2021. The Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community has faced no shortage of violence and discrimination across multiple time periods.

Children’s Theatre Company's wildly creative version of Lewis Carroll’s Timeless Classic - Alice in Wonderland Returns for the First Time in Over a Decade

February 13-March 31, 2024
This past week, AMA was kindly invited to a fresh rendition of Alice in Wonderland, which will run until March 31, 2024 at the Children’s Theatre Company. Our agenda included pre-show reception of community organizations with opportunities for networking, but we would be remiss not to mention our run-in with a protest targeting the Minneapolis Institute of Arts outside the premises. The CTC and MIA share a building, explaining the protestors’ presence, and they related to us their growing frustrations with MIA’s leadership and lack of follow-through on diversity initiatives.

AMA Shares the Critical Info about 2024 North Star Promise Scholarship Program

Minnesota residents who make under 80,000 AGI (Adjusted Gross Income) will be eligible for the North Star Promise (NSP) Scholarship “last dollar” program. Starting Fall of 2024, the Scholarship will cover the rest of the remaining balance of tuition and fees after other scholarships, grants, stipends, and tuition waivers deductions for new and returning students. Some individuals may be eligible to receive 100% of their balance. The goal is to provide free tuition, including fees for those in higher education. This will create a more accessible and affordable opportunity, especially for those who did not have the financial means to pursue higher education previously. As an incentive for the state, the program will also create more qualified candidates for the state’s labor force.

Spirit of collaboration and equity drives the Saint Paul tech scene

As industries evolve, organizations require more tech talent to keep up with the dynamics of rapid change. Twin Cities business leaders know community solutions are required to move the Minnesota tech economy and workforce forward, and Saint Paul, in particular, is brimming with those solutions. One such example of these solutions is Bridgemakers’ Tech Entrepreneur Fellowship.

This fellowship, in partnership with Saint Paul Full Stack, is designed for young tech-focused entrepreneurs (ages 18-25), prioritizing youth from low-income backgrounds, youth of color, or youth otherwise facing the most adversity. The fellowship runs for six months, during which young people participate in an immersive program to develop their business and leadership skills and gain access to mentorship, a stipend of $1,200 per month for living expenses, and $5,000 for the development of their businesses.

Read Full Stack’s full article on the initial six-month cohort, here, and look for opportunities to join the second cohort of tech entrepreneurs in 2024.
