Principal’s Notes

It is hard to believe it is Week 6! For most of you, reading break is coming up next week. I know for many it is the light at the end (or perhaps in the middle) of the tunnel. A chance to breathe, to sleep, to process, perhaps to catch up, maybe for some to get ahead. I know there is a busy week ahead and you are probably not even thinking about reading break, but when you do, it is a really great idea to make a plan. Just start with a list. What needs doing, then consider the week ahead. Do you need to just stop and rest and recharge and then put some time aside each weekday to work on stuff? Would you rather just power through and get it done, then give yourself a bunch of days off? Are you better working in the morning or the afternoon? Are you headed somewhere sunny and warm, well you are going to need a different plan then, and boy am I jealous!

Ok, it isn’t reading break this week but there are some fun things happening at LEC this week. We have Loving LEC on Valentine’s Day (February 14th). And don’t forget the Lady Eaton Photo Contest is happening all month long, so send in your best photo that captures the magic of this LEC community.

Story Time with Steph

Hello Good Humans of Lady Eaton!

This is such a lovely month to celebrate all the types of love! I hope you’re able to do something with those you love and toad-ally give yourself some love too. If you’re looking for some ideas, look no further! You’re welcome to join us at Loving LEC on Wednesday Feb.14th to make some layered dessert treats followed by a cozy rom-com in the Pit with some Valentine’s crafts! However you celebrate love this month, I hope you find something joyful to feed your journey.

Speaking of journeys, we are half way through this semester! Time flies! We are toad-ally cheering you on as you get through midterms. I know it can be hard to balance the academic journey and all the other journeys we may be on, but I believe in you! Try to find some time this week to love yourself and appreciate all the hard work you do, I know I do (really, I mean it)!

Reading Week Tips from Academic Skills

Reading Week is almost here and it's a great time for rest, catching up, and preparing for the next half of the term. It can be challenging to balance those priorities, so here are some strategies to help you get the most out of your week!

  • First, make one big list of all the things you have on your mind and anything coming up! Seeing everything on paper usually feels less overwhelming than how it looks in our head.

  • Next, prioritize based on urgency and importance. You might consider due dates, grade value, or personal importance.

  • Now you're ready to break those tasks down! The smaller and more specific our tasks are, the easier they will be to get started on and make progress.

  • Make a doable plan! Whether it's a daily to-do list, a time blocked schedule, or using sticky notes for a flexible task list, consider when you will work on tasks, how long you will spend, and how you will build in some time for you (include restful and relaxing tasks on your list!). Test out some Academic Skills tools.

  • Lastly, consider how you can spark your motivation! Getting started is often the hardest part and we know that motivation follows action, so consider what helps you to get started and keep going. Examples may be to start your work session with an easy win - a low-effort task that feels easy to complete; you might use a timer for finding a work rhythm between focus time and break time; you could try writing a reverse to-do list of what you've already completed, incentivize yourself with rewards, or share your work plan with an accountability buddy.

Looking for more tips or an opportunity to check-in with an Academic Skills instructor over Reading Week? Join me on Wednesday, Feb. 21st at 1PM on Zoom for tips on how to catch up if you've fallen behind (we've all been there!). Toad-ally Top Three

Hello friends!

In light of current events (aka Taylor Swift winning album of the year and simultaneously announcing a new album!) (and Taylor Swift’s boyfriend’s team winning the Super Bowl!), I thought it would be fitting to pick the top three Tay-Tay songs, but with an LEC twist! Sooo… here are the top three Taylor Swift songs that represent LEC:

  1. ME!- You must have seen this coming, the positive and welcoming upbeat energy of this song is *so* LEC! If you need a pep-talk from Taylor herself, I recommend having a little dance sesh to this song.

  2. Question…?- As students navigating university life, we have lots of questions! I’m here to tell you that if you ever find yourself walking into the College Office saying “can I ask you a question…?” we will have answers! Or if we don’t we will find the person who does. Questions are 100% welcome!

  3. Out of the Woods- Here’s a shoutout to the beautiful namesake of our newsletter… the Drumlin! If you need you to get out of the academic woods, maybe it’s time to head out to the real woods! A walk through the Drumlin can be the perfect thing to help you recharge.

Musings on Music

It’s February and that means Black History Month! A month to highlight the contribution of Black individuals to music, art and human rights. It is important to celebrate but also to remember that there is still a lot of work to be done so that Black communities feel recognized. Did you know that only 11 Black artists have won Album of the Year? One of the best influences of black communities is found in jazz. Originally from New Orleans, Jazz was first played in the red district, and despite the efforts of the military to stop the popularization, Jazz took off. I would love to show some of my favourite jazz songs, and because is Black History Month, I obviously need to include Jimi Hendrix, despite him not being Jazz. Although he played blues before!

- Koko, Charlie Parker

- Hello, Dolly!, Louis Armstrong

- What a Wonderful World, Louis Armstrong

- All Of You, Ella Fitzgerald

- Everything Happens to Me, Samara Joy

- When Lights Are Low, Dakota Staton

- Ceora, Lee Morgan

- Cantaloupe Island, Herbie Hancock

- Watermelon Man, Herbie Hancock

- Strasbourg / St. Denis, Roy Hargrove

- Take the “A” Train, Duke Ellington

- Little Wing, Jimi Hendrix

- Voodoo Child, Jimi Hendrix

Let it rip,

AQ

Happy Monday LEC!

This week is valentines! Here at LEC we’ll be celebrating at our Loving LEC event (brought to you by LEC Cooks)! This time of year I always find myself gravitating towards romance novels. Not just because of valentines day but also because reading a romance can be a fun way to escape the midterm stress. So, this week I’m recommending my all time favourite romance novel!

Recommendation: Today, Tonight, Tomorrow by Rachel Lynn Solomon! Academic rivals to lovers! Scavenger hunt! Story takes place over 24 hours! In this romantic novel two rivals unexpectedly team up to win their school’s graduation scavenger hunt!
