Dear colleagues,

I hope you are all enjoying the longer days, and slightly warmer temperatures.

Wellington College Learning Alliance has been busy, as usual. Under the umbrella of the Student Alliance we began recruiting for our second series of enterprise days, called Wellington Future Founders. Run by Head of Business at Wellington College Simon Roundell and alcohol-free drinks entrepreneur Amanda Thomson, this first ran in 2023 and saw eight students being taught how to make a £20 seed fund grow. Money-making ideas ranged from making and selling crochet animals, designing and printing t-shirts and taking people’s glass bottles to the recycling centre for a fee. They were able to keep 90% of their profits and finished the year with a trip to Sony Pictures Entertainment UK headquarters in London Paddington, where they watched Gran Turismo and had a mini graduation event. (see picture below)

This year we are again offering it to WCSA students and Simon and Amanda have chosen four pupils from the Forest School and Gordons to join the project. It will run from this month until December and we will wait with bated breath to see what the new bunch of would-be entrepreneurs decide to do with their money!

We also ran an online session for prospective Oxbridge applicants in Year 10, 11 and 12, which gave out general information about the application system and was attended by 173 students from 11 different partner schools, as well as an Oxbridge online super-curricular workshop for Year 12s, attended by 109 students from 13 different partner schools.

The Wellington College University Fair for Year 12s also attracted 143 students and parents from schools within the partnership and there is another Oxbridge session lined up for this term aimed at parents of Year 10/11//12 students.

Moving on to the rest of this term, on the morning of March 12 we will welcome a group of girls to Wellington for the WCSA's first Women in Construction workshop. Kindly being run by housebuilder Taylor Wimpey, this will include an introduction to the roles within the business/industry, female speakers from Taylor Wimpey and their backgrounds, a sustainability exercise and a building exercise with prizes. This follows on from a successful workshop they ran at our STEM day last Spring where students had to build a tower out of straws. We are also running three big events; a Year 9 STEM Day, Year 9 Humanities Day and Year 10 Skills Day. The STEM Day is now full but you can use this link to book a place on the Humanities Day and this link for the Skills Day (see dates below).

We will also run four more of this year’s 12 Outdoor Education Days between now and Easter with visits from Winston Churchill, Kings International, Easthampstead Park and Robert Mays schools. Fingers crossed for some sunny days.

Our Year 13 Wheelers, pictured above, came in for a Study Day on February 7, spending the day with teachers in their A level subjects. Those studying biology impressed Wellington teacher Astrid Edmunds, who dropped us a line saying: "I just wanted to pass on how delightful the Wheeler students were. Their lab skills and biological knowledge were excellent. They were such a pleasure to be around and a wonderful group of students." All credit to them. We wish them all the best of luck in their exams, and look forward to seeing them again in June when they attend their Wheeler graduation ceremony.  The Year 11 Wheelers joined us last week for a day learning about soft skills and the Year 10s and Year 9 Wheelers will visit in March.

As part of the Teaching Alliance we hosted several Subject Specific Support Groups, including one in DET and Computer Science, a Teach Meet on AI, a two-day course in Foundational Coaching, and a two-day Mental Health First Aid Youth Course at Uplands School.  This month we start a two-day course in Advanced Coaching and the inaugural RS SSSG will take place at Edgbarrow School next month. (see dates below).

Lindsay and I continue our visits to schools in the partnership and enjoyed meeting staff at Ash Manor this morning. It is always great to see what schools are doing and their different approach to issues common to us all. Wishing you, your staff and pupils all the best for the rest of this term and I look forward to seeing you all soon.

Best wishes,
Paul
