The American Civil War West of the Mississippi River
Instructor: Charlie Richards (Hyflex)
Tuesdays, Mar 05 -26, 2024, 10:00AM - 11:00AM
This course will study the major campaigns and battles of the American Civil War in the large geographical area west of the Mississippi River.  There were over 130 named Civil War battles and skirmishes fought west of the Mississippi, from the earliest days of the war until the bitter end of fighting. Although usually involving smaller numbers of combatants than battles east of the Mississippi, battles in the Trans-Mississippi were important strategically and politically.  Understanding the importance of these battles, when, where and why they were fought, and their outcomes, provides insight not just into the course of the Civil War, but also into the social and political fabric of the contemporary southwestern states of our nation. Click here for more info and to register.

Abdication Or Regency:
What Happen
s When the Monarch Can't Do the Job
Instructor: Michael McDavid
Tuesday, Mar 26, 2024 - 1:30PM - 3:00PM
Over time, monarchs facing health or age-related issues have struggled to fulfill their duties. In the past, they often relied on family members or officials to unofficially take over. Nowadays, it's more common for aging monarchs to abdicate in favor of their heirs and retire. Young or incapacitated rulers may appoint regents to exercise authority until they can resume their roles. This session explores the history of British monarchy, focusing on abdications, regencies, and the possibility of Charles III needing a regent due to health concerns.
