Registration Now Open for the 2024 Idaho Prevention and Support Conference 

The 30th annual Idaho Prevention & Support Conference provides professional development focusing on innovation, best practices, collective problem-solving and motivation techniques to effectively serve historically underserved students. Conference attendees include K-12 teachers, counselors and administrators committed to creating safe and supportive learning environments for Idaho’s students. This year's conference will be held at the Sun Valley Conference Center in Sun Valley, April 10 - 12. Registration closes April 5. 

This year’s conference is organized by learning tracks specific to safe environments and discipline practices all school districts are required to implement. Participants are asked to select one learning track that will be their focus for the two-day event:
  • School Climate
  • School Safety and Security
  • Staff & Student Resiliency
  • Substance Misuse Prevention and Drug Free Schools
  • Suicide Prevention

Watch: Love the Bus Month Appreciation Awards

The Idaho Department of Education is recognizing Love the Bus Month by awarding a bus driver and special needs aid from Durham School Services for their above-and-beyond efforts to do the best by their student riders. Want to learn more? Check out the Love the Bus Month webpage to hear more about these everyday school heroes. 

Idaho Student Transportation Training Conference

The Idaho Department of Education is excited to announce the first annual Summer Training Conference, to take place at the Galaxy Event Center in Meridian and the College of Western Idaho campus in Nampa, July 23-25. The conference combines Train the Trainer courses and the Technician Workshop into a unified event, featuring fresh and revised content. 

The Idaho State Police and members of local law enforcement will be in attendance along with the Idaho Association of Pupil Transportation. An awards ceremony recognizing individual, school district and contractor achievements will take place at the Galaxy Event Center the morning of July 23 and a school bus market leaders meet-and-greet will take place on the evening of July 24 at CWI.

Contributors Sought for Special Education Parent Advisory Panel

The Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) requires that every state establish and maintain a Special Education Advisory Panel (SEAP) that advises on education and related services for children with disabilities. Educators and other stakeholders are encouraged to apply. 

The responsibilities of Idaho's SEAP are, as defined in IDEA Section 1412 (a) (21):
  • Advise on unmet needs within the state in the education of children with disabilities
  • Comment publicly on any rules or regulations proposed by the state regarding the education of children with disabilities
  • Advise on developing evaluations and reporting on data to the Secretary under section 1418 of this title
  • Advise on developing corrective action plans to address findings identified in federal monitoring reports under this subchapter
  • Advise on developing and implementing policies relating to the coordination of services for children with disabilities

Apply for the SEAP Panel
Academic Active Shooter Training Registration Now Open for All Stakeholders

School administrators, teachers, school resource officers, mental health specialists and more are invited to explore best-practices when it comes to keeping their education communities secure. The U.S. Secret Service Critical Protective Analysis Group (CPAG) will provide a briefing on Academic Active Shooter trends and practices that affect the physical protection of soft targets and hard targets. The event is being held free of charge and is intended for educators, law enforcement and other public safety professionals. All attendees must pre-register and RSVP by Friday April 12.

NTAC research indicates that establishing multidisciplinary threat assessment teams and encouraging school communities to report concerning behaviors are critical steps in the prevention of targeted violence.

The 2023-2024 Data Acquisition Calendar shows deadlines on documents, reports and more, including who the deadline applies to, details about the required submissions as well as the departmental contacts for both submissions and questions.

For Teachers

Free Summer Camp for STEM Teachers at Boise State University 

ASM Materials Camp for Teachers is a free idea-generating workshop introducing teachers to methods that make math and core science principles more enticing and relevant to middle and high school students. Materials topics are great motivators in any engineering, technology or science course as students learn concepts that are reflected in their everyday lives. Teachers leave our camps able to engage students using simple, low-cost experiments that integrate into existing lesson plans.

Camp participants will receive:

  • Three graduate-level professional development credits through Boise State University or four continuing education units (CEUs)
  • Breakfast and lunch every day
  • Free on-campus parking
  • Materials and lab supplies to take back to the classroom
  • Limited on-campus housing is available on a first-come, first-serve application basis for Idaho teachers outside of Ada County

National Essay Competition Sponsored by the National Battle Monuments Foundation

The American Battle Monuments Foundation (ABMF) "Past is Prologue" Essay Contest invites students ages 11-12, 13-15 and 16-18 to compete within their age group with an original essay.

Topics relate to historical events associated with an American military cemetery or monument overseas, managed by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC). More than 233,000 American service members are buried or memorialized at ABMC hallowed sites. The American Battle Monuments Foundation is an independent, not-for-profit partner of the American Battle Monuments Commission.

Essays are due by midnight MST on Friday, April 12. Winners will be announced on Gold Star Mothers and Families Day, September 24.

iSTEM Regional Professional Development Registration Open

i-STEM is a regional professional development opportunity, happening locally at six locations across the state. Each site features unique strands specific to needs of their communities and educators. Learn more about all of the strands here. Registration is $50, and schools open to paying registration on an educators' behalf will receive a 25% discount to pay by invoice. Please reach out to Katie Bosch-Wilson at the Idaho STEM Action Center with any questions. Your district may have funds to pay your registration fee to attend STEM AC PD opportunities. Learn more about Title 4 funding here and talk to your local administrator for guidance. Registration is due by March 16.
