Author visiting Emory University will speak at OLLI on Thursday, February 29, 10-11AM

Renowned speaker and author, Dr. David Sterling Brown, will be sharing insights from his new book, Shakespeare's White Others (Cambridge University Press).

Examining the racially white 'others' whom Shakespeare creates in characters like Richard III, Hamlet and Tamora – figures who are never quite 'white enough' – this bold and compelling work emphasizes how such classification perpetuates anti-Blackness and re-affirms white supremacy. David Sterling Brown offers nothing less here than a wholesale deconstruction of whiteness in Shakespeare's plays, arguing that the 'white other' was a racialized category already in formation during the Elizabethan era – Home/Bio — David Sterling Brown, PhD

NEW Abdication Or Regency:
What Happen
s When the Monarch Can't Do the Job
Instructor: Michael McDavid
Tuesday, Mar 26, 2024 - 1:30PM - 3:00PM
Over time, monarchs facing health or age-related issues have struggled to fulfill their duties. In the past, they often relied on family members or officials to unofficially take over. Nowadays, it's more common for aging monarchs to abdicate in favor of their heirs and retire. Young or incapacitated rulers may appoint regents to exercise authority until they can resume their roles. This session explores the history of British monarchy, focusing on abdications, regencies, and the possibility of Charles III needing a regent due to health concerns.
