The time for Justice is NOW – Say YES! To the Nehemiah Action, April 8, 2024

Dear friends,

Last October I wrote to you about the importance of our Justice Ministry that we do through PEACE (People Engaged in Active Community Efforts).
As we have been hearing the Gospel of Mark on Sunday, we’ve been reminded again that the need is urgent! The people in our community who need housing, who need mental health resources and who need to feel safe from discrimination is real. These things cannot wait!

We have passed bills that say that we have set aside money for housing, but then, none of it is spent! These actions have the effect of dampening our urgency while doing nothing to address the needs of our community. Folks in our own congregation are having to move because they cannot afford to live in Lake Worth.

I hate to use too many numbers or statistics, but our Area Median Income (AMI) is $90,300. That means that if you were to write down what every family makes and put them in order, the amount in the middle of those numbers would be the AMI. It is not the same as an average where you add up the numbers and then divide. Sixty percent of that is $54,180. In this county that is just under what we pay our teachers on average. On average, a first-year teacher makes $42,000. And we have not even begun to talk about the working poor. Imagine how little people in our service economy are trying to live on.

The housing crisis is directly related to the mental health crisis we are facing now. As people struggle to keep their homes, the stress of their lives becomes more and more difficult to bear. The cycles bills are unrelenting and so many people are just a paycheck away from a real financial crisis.

That is why we need you! We need to convince our elected officials that we are paying attention and that we need them to address these issues. We need affordable housing! We need it now. It cannot wait.

I am begging you, when one of our PEACE Team or Network members asks you to attend the Nehemiah Action, say YES! This is not a social event, though we will give you pizza at the church beforehand. It is an act of commitment to justice. It is a calling to account those with the power to change things to do the work!  It is our work to do together.

This is one of the reasons I came to St. Andrew’s, to be part of a church that makes a difference to our community! I’ll be looking for you on April 8 at the Convention Center and together we’ll make a stand for those who cannot do it without us.

Blessings,

The Camerata di Magdalena (South Florida's Youth Orchestra) Concert on February 9th was another wonderful production. Over $1200 was raised for The Holy Grille, South Florida's feeding program.

A Lenten Program every Friday in Lent at 6:00p.m.

The Stations of the Cross, also known as the Way of the Cross or Via Crucis, commemorate Jesus's passion and death on the cross. There are 14 stations that each depict a moment on his journey to Calvary, usually through sacred art, prayers, and reflections.

Life Transformed: The Way of Love in Lent
Join us each week after the Stations as we walk with Jesus in His way of love. This video and adult curriculum, prepared by the Church, will be offered as a time to share, study and share a simple supper together.

The Way Cafe & St. Andrew's

The Way Cafe continues to meet a growing need in the local Lake Worth Beach Community to feed the hungry.  We passed out 61 Brown Bag Lunches just last week.  Every time we stock our outside Food Pantry it is usually empty by the next day.

I would like to ask every person in our congregation to think about going through your home food pantry "Each week" and bring in "One non-perishable item" and place in the basket in the Narthex in the back of the Church.  If we make this a habit we will do a much better job of serving our hungry community.

If you still work perhaps we could set up a food donation box at your place of work?  Call Heidi at 561 706-5162 and I would be happy to set that up for you.

THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR VOLUNTEERS!

The Mary and Martha Chapter
of the Daughters of the King
March 2024

My Thoughts on Becoming a

Member of the order of Daughters of the King
by Jean Howard

Good leadership starts at the top. Three years ago four brave souls met and decided to start a Daughters of the King Chapter at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Lake Worth Beach, Florida.

Linda, Nora, Marylou and Margaret founded our Mary and Martha chapter and it has flourished ever since. With Linda our president we are Alice, Alison, April, Barbara, Carol, Deb, Glad, Jean, Kathie, Kelly, Lee, Margaret, Marylou, Nancy, Nora, Noreen, Pam, Sandra, and Twig.

The first Sunday in February the DOK met in our church choir pews and our Deacon April reminded us of the fruits of the spirit which are love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. We were asked to share when a person had demonstrated one of these gifts to each of us. I was impressed with the fact that those in attendance all agreed that they had each experienced so much love, generosity, and kindness and all the fruits of the spirit from each member. The Daughters of the King transforms.

Two years ago I endured a kidney condition that required several procedures and months of recovery. The Daughters of the King prayed for me constantly and literally prayed me into health. Our president Linda asked if I would like to consider becoming a daughter. I had been in a DOK chapter at a previous church and let my membership lapse because I became an Education for Ministry Mentor. I told Linda I felt I might not be prayerful enough to make the commitment. After completing the discernment classes required, I felt called to the order. The Daughters of the King transforms.

At St. Andrews we each have different gifts and we work as one to provide prayer, service and evangelism to take God’s kindness and love into our community in a visible way. As I write this, I am reminded that again I will have surgery and I am at peace and in good hands with my sisters who will pray for my. I was given a wonderful hand-made prayer quilt from Alice who has been making quilts and shawls as her ministry. God is at work in the lives of all of us each day and….

Motto of the Order
For His Sake…
I am but one, but I am one.
I cannot do everything, but I can do something.
What I can do, I ought to do.
What I ought to do, by the grace of God I will do.
Lord, what will you have me do?
