| | | Donation Spotlight Hardanger Embroidered Wedding Dress
Norwegian traditions and contemporary style combine to make this modern wedding dress. The late Maren Swenson Waxenberg, who grew up in Bismarck, wore this dress for her 1997 wedding. She along with Royal Hopkins and Bonnie Hadland spent two years working on the Hardanger embroidery used to embellish her bunad-inspired wedding dress. A bunad is a traditional Norwegian celebration garment worn during festivals, weddings, and other special occasions.
Hardanger is a whitework embroidery technique traditionally used to decorate the aprons, collars, and cuffs of bunader in Norway’s Hardanger region. The technique was used to decorate the entire wedding dress with great effect. Instead of an apron, Waxenberg decorated a full overskirt and moved the embroidered bands of the belt, normally found in front of the garment, to the back to create a train-like effect. | | | ND Heritage Center & State Museum Pop-up Programs

North Dakota History Volume 55, No. 4, Fall 1988 Lawrence H. Larsen reflects back on the 1953-1954 school year coaching the Hurdsfield Stags, a basketball team with a less than winning tradition. Although they finished the season with a 7-18 record, Larsen recalls an enthusiastic team carrying him off the court after a respectable victory over the conference champions in the first round of 1954 tournament play.
