Hardanger Embroidered Wedding Dress

Norwegian traditions and contemporary style combine to make this modern wedding dress. The late Maren Swenson Waxenberg, who grew up in Bismarck, wore this dress for her 1997 wedding. She along with Royal Hopkins and Bonnie Hadland spent two years working on the Hardanger embroidery used to embellish her bunad-inspired wedding dress. A bunad is a traditional Norwegian celebration garment worn during festivals, weddings, and other special occasions.

Hardanger is a whitework embroidery technique traditionally used to decorate the aprons, collars, and cuffs of bunader in Norway’s Hardanger region. The technique was used to decorate the entire wedding dress with great effect. Instead of an apron, Waxenberg decorated a full overskirt and moved the embroidered bands of the belt, normally found in front of the garment, to the back to create a train-like effect.
