The last HSMUN Session of the School Year a Great Success!

A very enthusiastic crowd of nearly 90 students from over 20 schools participated in Model UN this past Saturday at Webster University. We managed to discuss six resolutions on a wide range of topics, including forming an Eastern Oil Coalition, stabilizing Bosnia & Herzegovina, creating improved education for indigenous students in Mexico, and halting deforestation of the Amazon Rainforests in Brazil. As is often true, a few resolutions did not pass because of funding concerns, especially accountability of proposed monies needed. And some countries asking for the UN's help were questioned on how their needs, if fulfilled, would benefit the global community. Haiti proposed a detailed resolution about tackling the escalating gang violence in their country, hoping that decades of past colonial rule and abuse would gain support. Alas, the price tag was too high for too many countries to support. A very interesting outcome occurred when Russia presented a plan for the UN to help their weakened economy due to the emigration of skilled, young Russians and their declining higher education system. The Speakers List became an echo chamber of why should the UN help Russia when they invaded Ukraine? Some countries proposed also helping Ukraine's economy and instigating peace talks between the countries. Remarkably, Russia's resolution passed, possibly because the Russian delegate seemed far more interested in compromise and showed far less arrogance than Vladimir Putin.
It was a fantastic session to end the High School Model UN program for the school year. We look forward to seeing those delegates who aren't graduating again in the fall.
Thanks to all who filled out the evaluation form. The Amazon gift card winners were: Diya Arun, John Burroughs; Isabella Beck, Webster Groves High School; George Swayne, Rockwood Summit High School. Congrats!
