En enero de 2023 publicamos un informe sobre accidentes mineros al sur del Orinoco ocurridos en los últimos 10 años: desde el 2012 al 2022 se contabilizaron 72 accidentes mineros. 

Esta edición especial de nuestro Observatorio Socioambiental del sur de Venezuela revela que el año 2023 fue el de mayor número de accidentes reportados como consecuencia de accidentes relacionados a la minería aurífera en los estados Bolívar y Amazonas. La mayoría de incidentes documentados ocurrió en las minas del Callao, del Edo. Bolívar, en donde se totalizaron 47 víctimas fatales. (SOSOrinoco, 2023)

Estas cifras son el resultado de recopilar y contrastar lo publicado en distintos medios de comunicación social venezolanos, especialmente regionales. Pero la información obtenida sobre el terreno, extraoficial, apunta hacia una cantidad mayor de víctimas fatales. Fuentes anónimas refieren que, por ejemplo, en casos como el ocurrido en la cuenca del río Icabarú a finales del 2023 quedaron tapiados muchos mineros, por encima de la docena de víctimas que comunicaron los voceros oficiales de la Gobernación de Bolívar. Estas diferencias apuntan a la necesidad de que se haga la indagación específica
pertinente.

Mining Accidents

In January 2023, we published a report on mining accidents in the last 10 years in southern Venezuela: from 2012 to 2022, 72 mining accidents were reported.

This special edition of our Socio-Environmental Observatory of Southern Venezuela reveals that 2023 was the year with the highest number of reported accidents due to gold mining accidents in the states of Bolivar and Amazonas. Most of the documented incidents occurred in the mines of Callao, in the state of Bolivar, where a total of 47 fatalities occurred (SOSOrinoco, 2023).

These figures are the result of compiling and contrasting the information published in different Venezuelan media, especially regional ones. But the information obtained on the ground, off the record, points to a higher number of fatalities. Anonymous sources report that, for example, in cases such as the one that occurred in the Icabarú river basin at the end of 2023, many miners were never recovered and only a dozen victims were reported by official spokespersons of the Bolivar Governor's Office. These differences point to the need for a specific inquiry to be carried out.
