Summer Course Registration is Open
Take advantage of the opportunity to accelerate your learning journey, catch-up on academic requirements, or explore an interest. Courses are offered in six- or 12-week terms, beginning either May 2 or June 17, 2024. The college office remains open throughout the summer term including Academic Skills and Academic Advising. If you need help remembering how to use the new Self Service site to register for courses check out our video tutorials.

Friday, March 8 is the Drop Deadline for winter-term courses. After this date students remain registered in winter-term courses and receive final grades. If you are considering dropping a course, I encourage you to check the grades you have back so far in the course and have a conversation with your instructor, lab demonstrator or teaching assistant. If you have questions about how dropping a course might impact your scholarship, please contact Financial Aid, and if you want to discuss how it will impact the completion of your degree, then Academic Advising can help.  Academic Advisors will be available next week for previously booked and same day appointments. You can look for available appointments on the Student Experience Portal or you can call Monday – Friday starting at 8:50 am for same day appointments. It will be busy next week so I encourage you to call 705-748-1011 ext. 7333 when booking begins each day. If you are not sure how to drop a course, check out the resources on the Advising website and/or pop by the college during office hours (Monday – Friday 9am – 4pm) and we can help you out.

Friday, March 8 is also International Women’s Day and the Marjory Seeley Women in Leadership Luncheon.
You are invited to join us for a panel discussion and lunch featuring three wonderful alumni speakers and food from By The Bridge. Students from all colleges and all gender identities are welcome!

You can stop by the College Office to sign one out.

March also means International Women's Day! And that always means the super wonderful and deliciously full LEC event "The Marjory Seeley Luncheon". Academic Skills

Academic Skills Tips for Catching Up

March is a busy month! If you're feeling like you've fallen a bit behind, you're not alone. Consider the following tips to help you catch up.

  1. Take a deep breath and practice self-compassion. How would you talk to a friend in your situation?  You'd likely be patient and kind; try to show yourself that kindness.

  2. Map out your assignment due dates on a calendar or list. If you haven't already done so, this can help you capture what needs to get done and when in one central spot. If you've already done this, check in with those dates and take an inventory of what needs to be done.

  3. Make one list of all of your tasks. This can help you prioritize tasks and create a time sensitive to-do list for you to follow. Try to prioritize tasks based on urgency (due date) and importance (grade value and/or personal importance).

  4. Make a daily and weekly plan for the tasks you need to address. Consider adding one catch-up item to your list each day.

  5. Schedule a catch-up period that would last a few hours on a day when you have minimal class time or other responsibilities. You could select 2-3 tasks to complete during that time.

  6. Remember to schedule self-care activities, breaks, and rewards into your daily plans and catch-up periods to help manage stress.

For more support, book an Academic Skills appointment and drop by an upcoming Academic Skills event.

Toad-ally Top Three

Hello Friends!

Happy early International Women’s Day! One of my favourite LEC events is coming up this Friday to honour the occasion! We have an amazing panel of speakers and some equally amazing food lined up for an afternoon of wonderful discussion. In light of this, this week I’ll be sharing the top three ways to celebrate International Women’s Day!

  1. Come to the Marjory Seeley Women in Leadership Luncheon- Shocker, I know. If I haven’t got you hooked on coming to this event yet, just wait until you see our guest speakers! We’ll be highlighting them on our Instagram over the next three days!

  2. Support women owned businesses and organizations- I bet there are women doing some great things in the community near you! At last year’s Women in Leadership Luncheon I learned about the Diverse Nature Collective from founder Patricia Wilson. It’s a super cool BIPOC led organization helping empower diverse conservationists!

  3. Send a shout out to the women in your life- Whoever your supporters are, International Women’s Day is a great time to appreciate your community!

Musings on Music

I watched Tokyo Drift this weekend, thinking I would see Devon Aoki in it. At first, I was anxiously waiting for her to pop up out of nowhere; after half the movie had passed, I remembered again, and I realised I had completely forgotten why I watched the film in the first place. I have to say I was invested in the movie. I finally understood why people like cars so much; there was a fantastic variety of colourful cars going incredibly fast, and every time they drifted, I would wait nervously for the scene to end. So, for today, I recommend songs that remind me of an anxious thought that dissipates into nothing. Let's grab something to eat and enjoy the moment.

- Oblivion, Grimes

- Venus Fly, Grimes & Janelle Monáe

- This Could Build Us a Home, The Garden

- Mildred Pierce, Sonic Youth

- Let’s Dance in the Dirt!, Macabre Plaza

- 2 + 2 = 5, Radiohead

- Banana Peel, The Garden

- Deeply, bôa

- I’m A Woman, The Garden

- Cupid De Locke, The Smashing Pumpkins

- Freight Yard, The Garden

- Athoth a Go!! Go!!, Machine Girl

Let it rip,

Adriana

Bookish Babbles

Happy Monday LEC!

This Friday is International Women’s Day! I had a difficult time deciding on a book this week because there are so many strong female characters and authors out there. I finally narrowed it down to a popular novel that I think is definitely worth the hype!

In other exciting news, our Book Nook (in collaboration with Trent Book Club) is back in the off campus student lounge in the JCR! The Book Nook is our community bookshelf - feel free to take a book or leave a book!

Trent Active Minds 6th Annual Mental Health Panel

At Active Minds, our mission is to change the conversation about mental health and to create lasting change in how mental health is discussed. One of the many ways we seek to accomplish this is by giving a voice to those within the Trent community.

For the last five years, Trent Active Minds has hosted 'Mental Health Panels' featuring a series of student, professor, and special guest panelists to discuss the influence of a prevalent topic on mental health. This year, our focus is on LGBTQ+ hate, discrimination, and their connection to mental health.

Panelists will share their direct/indirect experiences or research on the panel's topic, followed by a Q&A session by the panel's host and audience.

Join us on Thursday, March 21st, from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM in the Trent University Student Centre Event Space for our sixth annual Mental Health Panel on Navigating the Shadows: LGBTQ+ Hate, discrimination, and Mental Health!
