50+ People Show Up to Testify for Housing in the Supplemental Budget - You Can Still Submit Written to Add $20M to Build Housing

The Governor's proposed Supplemental Budget included $10M for Maine Housing's Affordable Home Ownership Program, and $16M for Maine Housing's Emergency Shelter Program. Recognizing the housing supply crisis we are in, MAHC asked for an additional $20M to invest in Maine Housing's Rural Rental Housing and LIHTC to build affordable homes. MAHC Submits Testimony To Support Addition of Elevator Inspectors in Maine
The Governor's Supplemental Budget includes funding to add two elevator inspectors.  MAHC supports this to reduce housing production delays caused by limited access to inspections.

The Economic Development Council of Maine hosted a housing policy panel this week including Dan Brennan, Maine Housing; Laura Mitchell, MAHC; and Ben Averill, Housing Opportunity Program at DECD. MAHC made great connections with communities interested in housing in their communities. MAHC presentation.

With a presidential election, and a new Maine legislature starting,  this is the event to understand what’s ahead for housing and how to get involved in advocacy so all Maine people have a home.

WHAT HAS ZONING REFORM ACCOMPLISHED IN CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS?
Our latest America’s Rental Housing report highlighted the first-of-its-kind 100 Percent Affordable Housing Overlay (AHO) in Cambridge, Massachusetts as an example of how communities are changing zoning to address the affordable housing crisis. Passed in 2020, the AHO sought to remove barriers to affordable housing construction throughout Cambridge. The city has since implemented and adapted this new zoning framework, putting an amended Affordable Housing Overlay 2.0 into practice last October. Expanding Homeownership with Manufactured Housing
Harvard Center on Housing - 23rd Annual John T. Dunlop Lecture: For over three decades, Dr. Margot Kushel has both cared for people who experience homelessness and studied the causes, consequences, and solutions to homelessness. Kushel will discuss insights that have emerged from her work as a physician and researcher, showing that California’s homelessness crisis is primarily due to the lack of housing that low-income households can afford. Register to attend in person; no advance registration required for livestream.
