MARCH 2024

Making Highgate a Better Place to Live and Work
This month, we’ve got a link in the newsletter to the full Environment Committee report, and an enthusiastic member has submitted his ideas for improving the High Street. The views expressed are those of the author, but with too many empty shops in the High Street and the old 271 bus stand still without a useful function, all ideas to revitalise the High Street are welcome. Do write with your own suggestions.

On the 17th, don’t miss the next Sunday Lunchtime Concert and a week later, come and join us in the Highgate Society hall to meet local charities and groups to have a chat over a coffee and see if you’d be interested in volunteering for any of them.  Meanwhile we at the Highgate Society have launched our own volunteering page on our website. See https://highgatesociety.com/people/volunteering/

As always, feedback is welcome – just hit reply on this email.
NEWS
Latest Environment Committee report published

The Highgate Society Environment Committee's Spring 2024 report has been published and can be read here. As well as reporting on the many planning applications and proposals that the committee has considered and commented on, the report also covers meetings with Camden and Haringey planners and provides an update on national planning policies.
A better Highgate High Street?

What could our commercial centre look like if it were a place that prioritised people, not cars?  A Highgate Society member has put forward an intriguing proposal for making the centre of the village a more welcoming, pedestrian-oriented place. The views expressed are those of the author, but we thought you would be interested to see them. Click here for the full article. (A shorter version will appear in the Spring issue of the Society’s magazine buzz).
Action needed at dangerous junction on Highgate Hill

In 2017, due to concerns about the safety of their pupils crossing Cholmeley Park at its junction with Highgate Hill, Channing School  paid for professional transport planning & highway design consultants Caneparo Associates to assess the junction and make proposals for safety improvements.

Their proposals almost certainly would have prevented this accident in 2022. They were discussed at a meeting with Haringey officers, but we have seen no action taken. Sadly, the opportunity to include this improvement into the works currently in progress at The Bank has been missed.

Please write to the Highgate (Haringey) ward Councillor Scott Emery (scott.emery@haringey.gov.uk) and to Cllr Seema Chandwani, Haringey Cabinet member whose responsibilities include Highways (seema.chandwani@haringey.gov.uk) if you have comments on this section of Highgate Hill between Bisham Gardens and Hornsey Lane. Please copy chair@highgatesociety.com. Where an issue seems to involve Camden as well as Haringey we will bring it to the attention of the relevant Camden Councillors.

For details of the Caneparo scheme, see this post on our web site.
Dartmouth Park Hill

The northern section of Dartmouth Park Hill outside the new Whittington Hospital development has now reopened to two way traffic.
Guerrilla gardening update

The HS Guerrilla Gardening group has been busy with planning for 2024 since its evening workshop in November. Work has included a walk-about through the N6 area to survey 16 potential sites for its activities and developing a map with notes, so that it can assign actions (even if just monitoring) to each site. The group is now looking for people that can join it to grow this initiative.
