Held at:
University Christian Church

Hyattsville, MD
(In-Person & on Zoom)

How the Word is Passed:
A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America

PBUUC Diversity/Anti-Racism
Transformation Team (DARTT)

with Worship Associate Lula Beatty

What happens when we refuse to see the truth even when that truth is in plain sight? This Black History service, led by the DARTT Bookread group, explores how our willingness to open our minds and hearts to our painful common history can lead to racial healing and justice.  It is based on the book How the Word is Passed:  A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America by Clint Smith.

The Wheel Of Life

Sandra Peavey, who along, with her husband, Bernie, was a long-time active member of Paint Branch, died on February 7.  She died peacefully, surrounded by her family, after suffering a stroke a few days earlier. She would have turned 86 on February 27th.  She will be greatly missed by her husband of almost 60 years, Bernie Peavey. Both Sandy and Bernie were active members of Paint Branch, maintaining their connection for several years after moving to Hingham, MA in 2006.  A Memorial Service is planned for the summer in Hingham.

You can read Sandy’s obituary here: https://www.downingchapel.com/obituary/Sandra-Peavey

You can get Bernie's address from Pastoral Care Associate Margaret McLellan, if you'd like to send him a card.

Social Justice Task Force Recruiting

Paint Branch has a rich history of making a difference in our communities through spirited engagement and direct action.   On our new church journey, it is a good time to review and develop a plan for how we will live our principles through social and political action and community engagement. Consider becoming part of the Social Justice Task Force that will make recommendations for how we will support social justice as a congregation.   Please contact Lula Beatty (lulabeatty@verizon.net) if you are interested in joining this group.  Thanks!

PBUUC Music Exploration

Greetings PBUUC!

Some of you know that the Music Task Force has been meeting regularly since November to consider music at Paint Branch and dream what it will be in the future. Bailey Whiteman, a singer, former music director, active Unitarian Universalist, and consultant, has been helping us frame questions to guide our work. We’re also facilitating music experiments to help us get creative, and enjoy some new musicians, styles, and ways to engage. What we’d love is feedback from you! Over the coming weeks, there will be cards available for you to share your thoughts and answer one or two questions about music at Paint Branch that day and more generally.

Please engage with us! Fill out the cards, email us at musictaskforce@pbuuc.org, and respond to requests you’ll see in the ContinUUm, from the pulpit, and through direct outreach. We want to hear from everyone so that we can lean into the opportunity to envision music at PBUUC.

Harmoniously,

The Music Task Force

Kathy Bartolomeo, Carol Carter Walker, Jim Flaherty, Jeanne Judd, & Mary Rooker

SPIRITUALITY CIRCLE

Spirituality Circle meets on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month at 11. Spirituality Circle is one of the many ways we come together at Paint Branch to find, develop and enhance our sense of belonging in community. It’s about encouragement and curious exploration of a variety of spiritual practices that connect us with the sacred. We support each other in our individual challenges and pursuits.

We are using a curriculum called “Faith Forward” again. In this series we are introduced to and asked to “try on” many different spiritual practices. We are asked to ‘keep an open mind and see what comes up for you’. Our bodies and minds mature. The same is true of our spirits. Practices that may not have served us well at one point in our lives, may serve you now. We are encouraged to approach these practices with “new eyes” and a sense of curiosity.

Because of the Congregational Town Hall we will not be meeting Sunday, Feb. 11th. Our next meeting will be Feb. 25th when Raman Pathik will join us to share his experience with meditation and about the book he wrote and the one he is currently working on. Attending previous sessions is not necessary for attending any session but if you want information about them you are encouraged to look at the Handouts available below.

Hope you will join us. Here is the new link:

Visiting Steward Recruiting is Happening
—EMBRACING OUR COMMUNITY!

We are approaching the Stewardship Campaign for the 2024-2025 church year, and we need helpers!  Would you like to be part of this important activity?  The time commitment is low (attend training (1.5 hours) and contact no more than five people (over a 6-week period), and the work is vital to our community.  Please contact Kathi Yu (kathiyu@gmail.com) or Liz Citrin (liz.citrin@gmail.com) to volunteer or if you want a little more information.  Thank you.

Paint Branch offers several forms of caring support for congregants:
Rev. Ann is available for pastoral visits and phone calls: 301-937-3667 or minister@pbuuc.org.

Pastoral Care Associates offer spiritual listening and compassionate presence: pca@pbuuc.org.

The “We Care” Team offers assistance: If you or someone you know would appreciate one of these supports, please be in touch with us at any of the emails above.
And if you would like to offer to help in one of these areas, please let any of us know!
