Members Spotlight

Michèle Prinsep
Our member's spotlight features Michèle Prinsep, Associate Professor and Academic Team Leader at the University of Waikato.   (Pictured above) .
As a natural products chemist, her research  focus is to isolate bioactive and/or novel compounds with potential use in pharmaceutical, agricultural or horticultural industries.  Aprof Prinsep also has an interest in chemical ecology or how organisms utilise chemical in their everyday lives.

What got you into Marine Biotechnology?
I’ve always been fascinated by marine organisms ever since watching television programmes made by Jacques Cousteau as a child. I loved the variety of forms of the different organisms and the colours. I always really enjoyed both Chemistry and Biology at school and university so when I had the opportunity to pursue a PhD in marine natural products, it was a very good fit for my interests.

What are the toughest challenges you’ve had at work?
Learning to juggle multiple tasks at once and to accept that what you had planned to do on a given day might be thrown out of the window if something more urgent comes along…

What skill do you think everyone should learn?
Efficient time management techniques -they really help (see previous question!)

What excites you about your current project?
We are currently looking at New Zealand nudibranchs, determining what they eat and if they have dietary preferences. We isolate and identify chemicals from the nudibranchs to determine if they came from their diet and if they are novel (and useful) compounds. It’s a really great combination of classical natural products chemistry with marine ecology.
2024 Summer Student Internship Award
Deadline Extended

For the purposes of this award, an “internship” is defined as a paid or volunteer work or training experience (minimum 2 weeks) in which an individual has intentional learning goals.

The award includes a one-off payment to student of ~$500 AUS /NZ
ANZMBS will provide up to two awards per year to student members who wish to undertake an internship in any area of Marine Biotechnology with an approved organisation.
Awardee’s will be required to submit a short report of their activities and learnings that will be included in the ANZMBS newsletter.

International Day of Women and Girls in Science
International Day of Women and Girls in Science is an opportunity to promote full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls. With International Day of Women and Girls having just passed, we would like to acknowledge the challenges faced by Women and their involvement in Fieldwork.

Recently published in an article in "The Conversation", Australian and New Zealand researchers wrote about 5 ways to improve, based on their 2023 study published in Cambridge Prisms: Coastal Futures
