Hello Hornets!

We hope you had as exciting of a week as our athletes did! Thanks for joining us in this edition of The State Hornet Sports newsletter. This week The State Hornet covered basketball and softball recaps, as well as an opinion on how the NFL treated Colin Kaepernick.

OPINION: The NFL blackballed Colin Kaepernick and never apologized

In 2016, Colin Kaepernick decided to sit down during the national anthem and later kneeled in support of the fight against police brutality, discrimination and racial inequality. Arts and Entertainment staffer Ismael Martinez Castillo expressed his opinion on how the NFL has treated Kaepernick since he kneeled during the national anthem back in 2016.

As a San Francisco 49er fan, I feel quite ecstatic about my team being in Super Bowl 58 against the Kansas City Chiefs. However, I can’t help but think about what the National Football League did in 2016 to my favorite quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

On Sept. 1, 2016, Kaepernick, a starting quarterback in the NFL, performed one of the most courageous acts I’ve ever seen done by a professional athlete. Kaepernick sat down during the national anthem and later kneeled in support of the fight against police brutality, discrimination and racial inequality.

Three days removed from a tough home loss to Idaho, the Sacramento State men’s basketball team fell flat on their face to Idaho State. In the Hornets’ next outing against Weber State, they kept it close but couldn’t overcome their continued indefensible mistakes.

The Bengals beat the Hornets in dominating fashion on Thursday 68-40. The Hornets led once in this outing when the score was 2-0, they also posted season lows in points and field goal percentage.

Sacramento State softball started their season off strongly with a 3-1 overall record in the NorCal Kickoff. The Hornets hosted Cal Poly, San Jose State and Middle Tennessee before heading to UC Davis on Sunday.
Starting with a double header on Friday, Sac State held Cal Poly to only one run but couldn’t make it down the third base line despite a strong showing on both defense and offense.

The Hornets led the game in hits and senior pitcher Marissa Bertuccio had four strikeouts compared to the Cal Poly pitchers who combined for three.

The Sacramento State women’s basketball team won their first road game of the season and snapped the first place Northern Arizona Lumberjacks’ eight-game win streak on Thursday in Flagstaff, Arizona.

The Hornets, who were just 1-18 two weeks ago, have won four of their last five games and pulled off their biggest win yet. A win so big that Sac State head coach Aaron Kallhoff jumped into a freezing cold pool to celebrate.

“I really feel like our first five can play against any five in the league,” Kallhoff said.
