'Hostages taken by Hamas must be released and Hamas' capacity to inflict terror must be removed'

While MPs in the House of Commons debated a motion for a ceasefire in Gaza, the Board of Deputies reminded political parties that a long-term resolution to the conflict will not be brokered in Parliament but by Israelis and Palestinians themselves. Our full statement:

"Many people have been deeply affected by the tragic situation in Gaza. Any Parliamentary motion relating to a ceasefire must acknowledge both that those hostages taken by Hamas must be released and that Hamas' capacity to inflict terror must be removed.

"Political parties should understand that a long-term resolution to this conflict will not be brokered in Parliament, but by Israelis and Palestinians working with global partners."

Hostage vigil takes place at Westminster

A vigil for the more than 130 hostages still held captive in Gaza was held at Westminster this week. The Board of Deputies will be holding two further vigils at Westminster next week. If you would like to participate on Tuesday or Wednesday, click on the link below.

More than 70 synagogues and organisations have now signed up to the Board of Deputies' Adopt a Hostage campaign. Those signing up will "adopt" a named  hostage and will liaise with families to provide whatever support they can as well as providing publicity for the hostage they have "adopted". DEPUTY SPOTLIGHT: Jeff Norman

Jeff Norman has represented Bushey United Synagogue as a Deputy since 2012 but he still remembers the sense of surprise which he experienced shortly after attending his first meetings.

He recalls: “Like most people who never been involved with the Board I didn’t really have an idea of the range of what they did and I have to say I was really amazed at the range of activities.”

President Marie van der Zyl, Vice President Amanda Bowman and Chief Executive Michael Wegier attended the 2024 World Jewish Relief dinner.

Vice President Amanda Bowman delivered a presentation to the Beth Shalom Reform Synagogue, Cambridge, about the work of the Board of Deputies. Deputy Peninnah Serrano spoke about the role of a Deputy. Deputy and Community Engagement Manager Sara Radivan also attended.

Interfaith
Chief Executive Michael Wegier, Director of Public Affairs Daniel Sugarman and Deputy and Community Engagement Manager Sara Radivan met Church of England Representatives to discuss interfaith relations.
