Fascinating. Deeply moving. Beautifully written. Definitely one of my favorites of 2024! A feminist queer anti-racist fiction novel that carries you through the lives of twelve unique main characters, all intertwining in surprising ways. I have been reading non-fiction for so long, but Bernardine Evaristo succeeded in proving to me how fiction can convey vibrant and authentic perspectives, by strong, independent, and inspiring characters while exploring as many topics as class, race, sexuality, gender, abuse, and Britain’s postcolonial history. If you ever struggled to understand the concept of intersectionality, this book is for you.

Who is it for?

Sexism, racism, classism, and queerphobia are forms of discrimination that can be challenging to fully comprehend for those who have not personally experienced them. This book will help you improve your comprehension of what daily microaggressions may look like for marginalised groups.
