Dear <<First Name>>,

I had a fantastic time visiting the City of Kelowna, as this week we broke ground on the construction of the new Bertram Multi-use Overpass, a safer, accessible, convenient connection over Highway 97 for people walking, biking, and rolling. It’s wonderful to see the city make great use of $7 million out of the Growing Communities Fund that they received last year to address public safety. I am excited to see what great other initiatives the city will do next!

Thank you to these wonderful City of Kelowna workers for making the city so beautiful and making me feel so welcome in my visit.

I am honoured to attend the Alzheimer Society of B.C. Dementia-Friendly Legislature Luncheon with Harwinder Sandhu, MLA for Vernon-Monashee, the Parliamentary Secretary for Seniors' Services and Long-Term Care.

We remain committed in raising awareness of the disease and of the importance of working together to address the incredible challenges dementia poses in B.C.

Thank you for always offering compassionate support for clients and their families on the dementia journey.
Here are some things I'd like to share with you from the past week:

Life-saving cancer therapy now being provided in British Columbia

As a society, cancer touches far too many lives here in B.C. It's a fight that affects our families, friends, and communities. We must find better and faster ways to prevent, detect, and treat cancers. I'm proud to announce our support for those facing the most devastating cancer threats by providing CAR-T therapy right here in B.C.

BCNDP government is taking many other actions to improve cancer care in BC:

• More oncologists
• Increasing access to vaccines to prevent and screening tests to detect cervical cancer
• Wider access to specialized cancer diagnostics like PET-CT scans and radiation therapy
• More access to targeted anti-cancer drugs

Province takes action to fund IVF, support families

Infertility and barriers to parenthood can take a toll on people wanting to start a family.

Being able to have a child shouldn’t depend on how much money you make, who you love or your relationship status.

That’s why we’re creating a publicly funded IVF program to support more people on the path to parenthood.

Budget 2024 supports improvements to treatment, recovery services

Many service providers in this sector are non-profits and they are doing everything they can to stretch their dollars.

That’s why we’re increasing daily rates for licensed and registered treatment and recovery home operators by up to 67%.

This investment is to make sure recovery homes can continue to improve the quality of care they provide even as they face the same cost pressures we all are feeling.

Province supports seniors living independent, healthy lives at home

As our population grows and ages, it is imperative to ensure people have timely access to the health-care services they need closer to home.https://news.gov.bc.ca/releases/2024HLTH0030-000339

That’s why we are expanding home health and community-based services for seniors.

At the same time, we’re strengthening other areas of our health-care system, so patients continue to benefit from the highest quality of care.

B.C. vineyards, orchards receive help to replant for changing climate

There are few things better than locally grown fruit and locally crafted B.C. wine.

That’s why we’re taking action to support farmers who have been hit hard by a changing climate with a new task force and replant program.

This will help about 1,000 more growers revitalize their farms and protect their businesses.

Province announces minimum nurse-to-patient ratios, retention and recruitment investments

We’re working hard to support and retain our nursing workforce, help nursing students start good careers, and recruit more nurses.

Nurses are an incredibly important part of our healthcare network, and we want them to feel supported at work.

Together with the BC Nurses Union, the Ministry of Health has established minimum nurse-to-patient ratios for six healthcare settings in acute care facilities.
