PRESIDENT RAMAPHOSA APPOINTS DUT’S DR MOHALE AS DEPUTY CHAIRPERSON OF THE MUNICIPAL DEMARCATION BOARD

The Director of Special Projects in the Office of the Vice-Chancellor and Principal at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Dr Matheakuena Mohale, was recently appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa as the Deputy Chairperson of the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB), with effect from 1 March 2024. The appointment will be for a period of five years.

This is Dr Mohale’s second appointment on the MDB. He was first appointed as the youngest member of the Board in March 2019, during which he also served as the Chairperson of the Research and Knowledge Management Committee.

PROFESSOR SWALAHA DELVES INTO RESEARCH IN THE WATER SECTOR THAT IS CRUCIAL FOR PRESERVING AND MAINTAINING THIS VITAL RESOURCE

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) hosted the inaugural professorial lecture of Professor Feroz Mahomed Swalaha, who is the Head of Department: Biotechnology and Food Science, full professor in the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science, in the Faculty of Applied Sciences. The inaugural lecture took place at the DUT Hotel School in Ritson Campus on Wednesday, 28 February 2024.

Programme Director for the evening was Senior Director of Corporate Affairs, Alan Khan, who extended a warm welcome the esteemed guests, DUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Thandwa Mthembu, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research, Innovation and Engagement, Prof Fulufhelo Nemavhola, Executive Dean from the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Prof Suren Singh, DUT deputy deans, DUT academics, support staff and Prof Swalaha’s family and friends.

DUT BUSINESS SCHOOL ENROLS 11 KZN MUNICIPAL COUNCILLORS FOR A HIGHER CERTIFICATE IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) Business School under the ambit of the Faculty of Management Sciences held an orientation for the newly enrolled Abaqulusi Local Municipality councillors at the ML Sultan Campus, Durban on Monday, 04 March 2024.

The councillors will be joining the DUT Business School’s Executive Education short course for a Higher Certificate in Project Management which comprises of different modules including essentials of Operations Management, Financial Literacy, Introduction to Technology, Cornerstone 101, Fundamentals of Project Quality, Introduction to Organisational Effectiveness, Introduction to Project Tools and Techniques and Essentials of Project Management aimed at enhancing their skills, improve performance and advance service delivery projects.

DUT TASK TEAM FOCUSES ON CREATING AN ENABLING ENVIRONMENT FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF TO FEEL SAFE AND HEALTHY

DUT Publications Officer Waheeda Peters spoke to DUT COVID-19 Response Task Team  (TT) Chairperson, Professor Champaklal Jinabhai, on the Task Team’s plans for 2024.

Prof Jinabhai explained the Team’s new, broadened focus for 2024 compared with its entirely COVID-related focus in 2020 and beyond. He said that for 2024, the Task Team has broadened its focus to health promotion and disease prevention because in addition to the COVID-19 pandemic, since 2020 there were the emergence of a range of infectious diseases, lifestyle related non-communicable diseases, as well as a serious increase in mental health and stress-related challenges.

MABONGA STRIVES TO FOCUS ON STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES

Driven by a desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, Slindile Fikile Mabonga, the newly appointed Social and Welfare Officer for the Student Representative Council (SRC) at Durban University of Technology (DUT), found herself venturing into the realm of student politics, a path she had never imagined pursuing.

“I never thought I would be involved in student politics, but when I saw an opportunity to make a difference, I could not resist. That is why I decided to join student politics in my first year and I’m so glad I did,’’ said Mabonga.

These values are underpinned by the principles of fairness, professionalism, commitment, compassion and excellence. DUT Media Officer Simangele Zuma, recently engaged in a conversation with Samkelisiwe Evelyn Sibisi, an Administrative Assistant at the Student Admissions unit, to delve deeper into the Living Values Framework and ENVISION2030.
