Minimum hours for GCSE Maths and English resits

HOW ARE SIXTH FORMS RESPONDING?
Reported last month was the new DfE guidance on resits in maths and English. Schools Week published a piece if you want to read more.

Some key points to note from the official document:

'For full-time students 3 hours per week for English and 4 hours for maths.'

IMPORTANT TO NOTE - 'For academic year 2024 to 2025, the minimum hours are therefore an expectation and we will not be measuring compliance against these.' This statement is helpful for those finding the late notice a challenge to implement: there is flexibility here it would seem!

'Effective for academic year 2024 to 2025 institutions will use their individualised learner record (ILR) and census returns to submit data that confirms whether they are meeting the minimum teaching hours for English and maths.'

The Netsixthform community has already reported some centres considering making it a condition of entry that students need to have a minimum of a 4 in maths and English. The unintended consequences of the new DfE guidance appears not to have been thought through!

WHAT IS REALLY DRIVING STUDENT ABSENCE?

NATIONAL ATTENDANCE RATES
A number of sixth form leaders have asked about national attendance data for post 16. Reliable post-16 figures are harder to come as the variation in circumstances is so broad, so it's helpful to compare with secondary pre-16 as a guide.

The latest figures we can locate are
8.7% in state-funded secondary schools (4.9% authorised and 3.8% unauthorised)

SO WHAT CAN BE DONE TO DRIVE UP ATTENDANCE AT POST 16?
Some schools face bigger challenges than others: the circumstances obviously vary. One thing is fairly clear, though sanctions will work for many, they tend not to improve the behaviour of persistent absentees. So what can we do?

We are pleased to announce full details of a session on post 16 attendance at the in-person conference in London on 28 June.

We invited asked John Atkinson from ImpactEd to deliver a session to go through research into the reasons why students struggle to attend. John will share the strategies developed in partnership with schools and sixth forms which delegates can consider adapting for their own centre.

Sixth form leaders should gather research-led ideas on what can be done that has impact.

Delegates will share their own strategies - what worked, what didn't - with colleagues. These key practical ideas will be shared with ALL delegates so there will be a wealth of potential solutions.
