Extending Intelligence

Hello, InterCom subscribers, and welcome to the start of a brand new series!

We re-launched InterCom one year ago with a three-issue volume about possible applications for using generative AI tools in language education.

Inspired by UNESCO's 2023 Guidance for Generative AI in Education and Research document, we want to return to this topic one year later to explore new applications for using AI in language learning contexts.

Over the next few months, we will take a deeper dive into various perspectives regarding the benefits and limitations of generative AI. In this first issue, we examine ways to use AI to extend, rather than replace, our human intelligences.

So join us as we explore using generative AI as a learning, teaching, and collaborative tool!

Language Learning in a New Digital Era

Learning Outcome(s): Learners will be able to...

  • Evaluate output generated by ChatGPT using an online pragmatics repository or other source.
  • Name benefits and limitations of ChatGPT
  • Identify personal skills for improving understanding of the information shared via ChatGPT

Material(s): ChatGPT, pragmatics.uoregon.edu, Generative AI Journal Template
