Research Ethics Announcement

Wondering if your project is quality assurance or research? Check out our guideline “Differentiating Between Quality Assurance and Research” and checklist to support MRU researchers and evaluators as they determine whether their proposed activity constitutes research or quality assurance (QA)/program review (PR), and therefore whether it requires HREB review or is exempt.

For Academic Staff

March 15:  2024 WCB-Alberta Research Grants Competition - LOI
WCB-Alberta promotes the development of effective disability management services and strategies, optimal approaches to recovery and return to work following workplace injury, and improved understanding of the factors involved in workplace injury. In order to inform better practice, WCB-Alberta provides financial support for research projects that address certain areas of interest. For the 2024 research grants competition, the Research Committee is particularly interested in receiving proposals that focus on: 1) The assessment and treatment of work-related psychological injuries; 2) Outcomes of medical and other interventions; 3) Treatment or service outcomes for individuals from traditionally underrepresented or marginalized groups. An LOI is required for this competition. If the LOI is successful, you will be requested to submit a full application.

Amount / Duration: no set amount (typical average: $40,000); funding provided in first year of project only.

Contact: Amy Procter, WCB-Alberta Research Program Coordinator (research@wcb.ab.ca)

March 21: HFSP Research Grant Program - LOI
Human Frontiers Science Program (HFSP) Research Grants support innovative basic research into fundamental biological problems with emphasis placed on novel and interdisciplinary approaches that involve scientific exchanges across national and disciplinary boundaries. Projects are expected to be at the frontiers of knowledge and therefore entail risk. Participation of scientists from disciplines outside the traditional life sciences such as biophysics, chemistry, computational biology, computer science, engineering, mathematics, nanoscience or physics is recommended because their contributions have made biological research increasingly quantitative and because such collaborations have opened up new approaches for understanding the complex structures and regulatory networks that characterize living organisms, their evolution and interactions. It is important to note that HFSP only funds basic life science research. Early Career Grants and Program Grants are available.

NOTE: You must apply by March 19 through Proposal Central to receive an LOI identification (ID) number. This number will then be used to submit your LOI by March 28. A Research Activity Form in MRU's Romeo system must be completed for the LOI by March 21. Full applications will be by invitation only in mid-July.
Amount / Duration: awarded 2-member teams will receive 300,000 USD, 3-member teams 400,000 USD and 4-member teams 500,000 USD annually, if all members have their labs in different countries: for up to 3 years

April 3: CIRA Net Good Grants

The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) funds community-led internet projects to build a resilient, trusted and secure internet for all Canadians. The CIRA offers funding in three areas: infrastructure, online safety, and policy engagement. Infrastructure: It funds community-led connectivity research, network planning and solutions. Infrastructure solutions must be community-led and owned, contributing to long-term community development. Online safety: Projects must focus on preparing Canadians to use the internet safely and confidently, building knowledge and protection against threats like misinformation, online harms, privacy intrusion and surveillance, harassment, cyberbullying and gender-based violence. Policy engagement: It funds events, research and policy ecosystem work that broadens public awareness, understanding and engagement in domestic internet policy and governance.

NOTE: Your application will require a letter confirming you are employed by the academic institution. Check with your Faculty-level HR Partner early about obtaining this letter.

Amount / Duration: up to $100,000 for 1 year

Contact: grants@cira.ca

Apr 24: SSHRC Connection Grants

These grants provide support for workshops, colloquiums, conferences, forums, summer institutes, or other events or outreach activities geared toward short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives. These events and activities represent opportunities to exchange knowledge and to engage on research issues of value to those participating. Events and outreach activities funded by a Connection Grant may often serve as a first step toward more comprehensive and longer-term projects.

Amount / Duration: $250,000 / yr for up to 5 years
