Call for submissions: OVPR Anti-Racism Grants
Applications are open for OVPR's Anti-Racism Grant program, which launched in 2021 to advance knowledge around complex societal racial inequalities that can inform actions toward equity and justice. Grants will be awarded up to $100,000.
This program was developed in partnership with the Provost’s Anti-Racism Initiative, and is jointly administered in partnership with the NCID’s Anti-Racism Collaborative. During the first three cycles, OVPR awarded more than $1.5 million to support 23 research projects.

NSF Partnerships for Innovation Program Grants

The NSF’s Partnership for Innovation (PFI) grants program supports use-inspired translational research, prototype development and the enhancement of partnerships across higher education, nonprofits and industry. The next NSF deadline is September 3. There are two tracks for this solicitation (PFI-TT and PFI-RP). PFI-RP is a limited submission and U-M can only submit one proposal.
The limited submission application for PFI-RP is now open and due May 28. Internal decisions will be made by mid-June. Learn more and submit your application.

Seed Funding for Firearms Storage and Safety Solutions
The Institute for Firearms Injury Prevention (IFIP) invites U-M faculty to submit applications to attend a Bold Challenges Launch Pad event, May 6-7. During this 1.5-day Ideas Lab-style workshop, participants will develop collaborative ideas for solutions to firearm storage and safety. Participants will share ideas, form teams and pitch plans to IFIP faculty mentors to receive feedback. Pitches that have the greatest potential to address firearm storage and safety will be invited to submit a 3-page proposal for consideration for funding.
There is $150,000 available for funding exploratory projects. Investigators must be present at the Launch Pad event to be eligible to apply for funding. Learn more and apply to attend the event by March 31.

HHMI support for early-career investigators
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) seeks applications from early-career researchers who are committed to advancing DEI in the basic life sciences. The 2025 Freeman Hrabowski Scholars Program will award up to 30 scholars and provide up to $8.6 million per scholar for up to 10 years.
Applications are due on May 15. U-M Foundation Relations and OVPR will host a virtual information session Friday, March 22, at 3 pm.

NIAID presentation on funding opportunities at U-M
LeShawdra Price, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease's Office of Research Training and Special Programs, will present two events on April 30 at Kahn Auditorium, BSRB.

Responsible Conduct of Research for K Awardees Seminars
RCR4K is a seminar that is designed to meet the requirements of the NIH K-23, or any federal or non-federal career development grant. The 5-session (10 hour) seminar is interactive, practice-based and focused on addressing RCR issues (ethics, integrity, and regulatory matters) that have arisen in the course of participants’ funded research. The sessions are open to U-M faculty and staff, with current K scholars and K applicants given registration priority.
Participants may register only for the sessions they wish to attend June-October 2024.

Research Track Faculty Symposium
In an effort to provide further resources and support to Research Track Faculty, OVPR will host a Research Track Faculty Symposium on May 28, 1-5 pm, at the Michigan Union. The planning team is seeking faculty input for topics to discuss during the symposium.

Distinguished University Innovator Award nominations
Innovation Partnerships is seeking nominations for the 2024 Distinguished University Innovator Award, the university’s highest honor for faculty who have shown leadership in bringing new ideas to the marketplace.
This award honors faculty who have made important and lasting contributions to society by developing novel ideas and insights through their research and then translating them into practice. Nominations of outstanding women, minorities and members of other groups historically underrepresented in their disciplines are encouraged.
Nominations are due May 17; the winner will be announced this fall at Innovation Partnerships’ annual Celebrate Invention event. For more information visit the Distinguished University Innovator Award webpage.

CoE Research Cores
Did you know that the College of Engineering (CoE) has several Research Core Facilities available to U-M researchers? Click on the links below to learn more about some of the services, equipment, and expertise available to help you on your research journey.
- The Michigan Center for Materials Characterization [(MC)2], is U-M's facility dedicated to the micron and nanoscale imaging and analysis of materials. Housed in NCRC Building 22, the center provides state-of-the-art electron and x-ray microscopy instruments, professional training, and in-depth education for students and researchers, fellow academic institutions, and local industry.
- The Lurie Nanofabrication Facility (LNF) is a state-of-the-art 24/7 shared user facility with 13,500 sq. ft of cleanroom space on North Campus (EECS building). With 135+ tools, they provide advanced micro- and nano-fabrication capability and expertise to U-M researchers, companies, government entities, and other academic institutions. Their 19 professional staff, including a dedicated user services group, support fundamental research, R&D and prototype fabrication, as well as hands-on education and outreach.
- The U-M Battery Lab is a full-service battery cell fabrication and testing facility open to any academic or industry user. The lab is an IP-protected safe zone where researchers from around the globe can prototype, test, scale up, and analyze batteries and the materials that go into them. Its 9,000 sq ft of research space includes a pilot line for pouch and cylindrical cells, an R&D pouch cell line, coin cell fabrication, electrochemical cycling, abuse testing, and a full suite of material characterization tools. A highly-trained technical staff offers guidance during us and instrument training. A second Pilot Line and Module Fabrication space will be opening in late 2024.
