Hello!

I am happy to announce that I have officially launched my campaign for State Representative! Representative Kay Khan announced her retirement after 30 years of dedicated service. Kay has been a caring and effective advocate on the environment, public transportation, health and human services, and equal rights for all, and I look forward to carrying on her work.

I believe my background and skills make me the best candidate to represent the voters of Newton’s 11th Middlesex District*:

  • I have deep experience getting things done in the legislative process. As a Newton alderman then City Councilor for 20 years, I held leadership positions and led on issues ranging from open space, tree protection, affordable housing, strong schools, and greater transparency in government.

  • I have a strong track record of constituent service. In my day job, I provide assistance to individuals and homeowners facing eviction and foreclosure, and direct consumers to much-needed resources. It is so rewarding to be able to help people with whatever problems they face, large or small. I look forward to hearing about your concerns and how we can address them.

As your State Representative, here are some ways I will work to make YOUR life better here in Newton:

  • BETTER PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. It is unacceptable that the MBTA reduced our bus service, and continues to let our commuter rail stops be inaccessible and decrepit. It is great news that the MBTA announced recently that they plan to fund the Newtonville stop, but I will not stop until all three stops are upgraded. The Green Line has had numerous days of partial or full shut-downs, and even a derailment last Saturday. We deserve a modern, functioning public transit system. Even those who must drive a car benefit from fewer cars on the road when our public transit system is working.

  • CLIMATE CHANGE. Did you know that it is the Commonwealth, not the federal government, that dictates energy policy? Newton is a climate leader, but we could be doing so much more if the state would partner with us with generous incentives for heat pumps, geothermal, electric school buses, and more. The state can also be doing much more to help protect our community from the impacts of climate change that are already here: flooding, heat, and drought. I will be a leader on all things green!

  • LOCAL FUNDING. Kay has done an outstanding job obtaining funding for important projects in our district, and I look forward to hearing what you see as our pressing needs. I have already heard requests for investments in arts and culture, parks, reducing invasive plants in the Charles River, and helping our small businesses thrive.

I am so grateful for your past support. I ask for your vote again on SEPTEMBER 3, so I can serve you as your next State Representative.
