AKP Announcement: Transition Complete!

AKP Special Announcement
March 2024

The Transition to NestWatch is Complete!

It’s the big news you’ve all been waiting for—the migration of the American Kestrel Partnership’s data management system to Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s NestWatch is complete! This milestone marks the culmination of months of effort by the American Kestrel Partnership (AKP) and NestWatch teams, and we’re thrilled to be embarking on this new chapter of collaborative kestrel conservation with you all.
The AKP and NestWatch teams have finished merging the AKP database into NestWatch! AKP partners who filled out our form last month, or new partners who haven't entered data before, can begin entering and managing their data through NestWatch at any time.  |  Photo by Banook Rodarte; BG screenshot courtesy of Cornell Lab of Ornithology's NestWatch.
If you haven’t entered any data through the AKP website in the past, you can begin entering data through NestWatch at any time. We’re excited to have you on the team, and welcome to the wonderful worlds of community science and kestrel box monitoring!

If you HAVE submitted data through the AKP website in the past, and you filled out the form we sent out as part of our full announcement last month, you should now be able to log into NestWatch using the Cornell Lab account you provided and view all of your AKP data there. You can begin submitting your 2024 data at any time. (And as we’re now in mid-March, breeding season—and therefore monitoring—should be starting very soon in most of North America, if you haven't already!)

If you’ve submitted data through the AKP website in the past, but DIDN’T fill out the form last month, your AKP data has still been moved into the NestWatch database; however, it will remain inaccessible to you until you contact the NestWatch team to get your data moved manually into your Cornell Lab account. Please do not re-enter any nest box records or observations in the NestWatch system that you already entered through the AKP website. This will result in duplicate data and cause problems during future data analysis—not to mention being unnecessary work on your part. If you’ve retired from kestrel monitoring, relax in the knowledge that your data are preserved and can still be used by scientists, even if you don’t need to access the account any more.
If you've submitted data to the AKP before and intend to do so in 2024, but didn't fill out our form last month, contact the NestWatch team to get your data transferred to a Cornell Lab account. Do not re-enter any box or observation data previously entered through the AKP website, as this will cause unnecessary work for you and problems during future data analysis.  |  Screenshot courtesy of Cornell Lab of Ornithology's NestWatch; BG photo by Kirstin Chapman
Got questions? We’ve got answers. That said, where those answers are depends on your question:
We've grown so much from our humble beginnings in 2012. It's all because of you, our partners, and we're forever grateful for your efforts. We can't wait to see where you'll take kestrel conservation next.  |  Photo by Heather Mishefske
We thank each and every one of our partners for your contributions to kestrel conservation over the AKP’s dozen-year history. Whether you’ve submitted two observations or 2000, adopted a kestrel box through our Adopt-a-Box program, or just spread a love of kestrels in the world, you are a valued member of our team. We’re proud of the work we’ve accomplished together so far, and we’re beyond excited to see what we’ll do together in 2024 and beyond.
From all of us on the AKP & NestWatch teams, and from American Kestrels everywhere…

Thank you.
