Principal’s Notes

This week I would like to join the Equity and Human Rights Office in inviting you to share your thoughts on Equity and Diversity at Trent.

To support Trent’s ongoing commitment to creating an inclusive, engaging, and supportive environment, the Equity and Human Rights Office is inviting all students, faculty, and staff at both campuses to participate in a university-wide survey – available now, until April 15.

Take the brief 15-minute EDI Survey.

Participation is voluntary and all responses are anonymous. The survey is administered by an independent organization, the Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium (HEDS).

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Your input will help develop a better understanding of how Trent’s campus climate supports diversity and equity.

Also, just in case you missed the bulletin last week, all Trent faculty and staff are invited to drop-in feedback session Tuesday March 19.

Following the naming of Gidigaa Migizi College and the unveiling of the new crest and colours, the University is moving forward with next steps in the creation of Trent’s sixth college, together with the development of new residences for Otonabee College.

As the design phase of the project gets underway, we want your input. Whether you are a staff member interested in campus development or a faculty member invested in enhancing the student experience, your perspective is vital.

All faculty, staff and students are invited to attend an interactive drop-in design feedback session on Tuesday, March 19 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the Student Centre event space (TSC 1.07).

At the event, you can view design concepts, layouts, and features of these two significant projects and meet representatives from Diamond Schmitt Architects and Knightstone Capital Management.

All are welcome. Light refreshments will be served, and no registration is required.

Toad-ally Top Three

Hello friends!

This week I was thinking about one of my favourite things as a student, and obviously that is… free stuff! As students, our budgets can be tight and maybe sometimes you just need a little treat. So in the interest of not gatekeeping, here are the top three free things you can find around campus:

  1. Plant Friending- This amazing event is happening *this Thursday* in the LEC Pit! Registration is required for a time slot to get a *free* new plant friend, an adorable pot for them to live in, and even macramé a hanger for them!

  2. TCSA Monday Brunch- As part of their effort to make sure students are well nourished to power through a day of learning, the TCSA offers free brunch every Monday in the Freedom Lounge! All students are welcome!

  3. Peterborough Library Book Kiosk- This is a personal favourite of mine, because what’s better than free reading material?? You’ll just need a library card and you’re all set to start loaning books from the vending machine looking thing outside the Bata Bean Café.

Musings on Music

Hello, beautiful people. I've been thinking about the boombox serenade scene in "Say Anything" almost nonstop. The thought of going with a massive boombox on top of my head, blasting music in a random street, cracks me up every time. Can I get someone to wake me up like that every day? Although there is not much difference with my alarm on my phone, as I put it to the loudest possible, and even then, I cannot wake up. Anyway, I would definitely choose the sweetest songs to put on the boombox. Just yesterday, someone told me that Laufey's music smells like spring and rain, which is the best description of her music; she's great. So today, I am showing songs to blast in that boombox to wake up the entire neighbourhood.

- Simulation Swarm, Big Thief

- Steeeam, Shelly

- From The Start, Laufey

- the perfect pair, beabadoobee

- Bags, Clairo

- Kingston, Faye Webster

- Amoeba, Clairo

- Shayla, Blondie

- Poli, Zoé

- Cool Cat, Queen

- Pink + White, Frank Ocean

- Falling Behind, Laufey

- Rhiannon, Fleetwood Mac

- There She Goes, The La's

- Lovefool, The Cardigans

Let it rip,

AQ

Happy Monday LEC!

This time of the semester can get extra busy with final assignments, so make sure you are taking time to de-stress! Consider attending our planting our sushi events which are sure to be a blast! Or spend time relaxing with a quick, easy read. Sometimes starting a book can be daunting, so try a light, fluffy read - like this week’s recommendation.

Recommendation: It Goes Like This by Miel Moreland! A girl band! Female Friendship! 2LGBTQIA+ representation! If you were a One Direction fan, you’re going to love this story of a popular girl band’s big reunion!

The Department of English is thrilled to invite you to not one, but two wondrous book launches for the 2024 edition of Chickenscratch, the English department’s undeniably amazing, peer-reviewed, absolutely gorgeous anthology of creative writing, written solely by Trent students, which is being released in a matter of weeks. Both launch events will include live readings by student writers who are published in the book, a great opportunity to mingle with students and professors alike, and an overall atmosphere of positive, springtime energy.

Copies of Chickenscratch 2024 will be available for purchase (cash only, please) and will also be available for online order through the Trent University Bookstore, once the book has been officially launched. All money received from these sales, by the way, is put, 100%, into the budget for the next edition of the book – and we rely on this funding to make the project happen. Please consider buying lots of copies!

Both events are open to the public, so please bring your friends and family or your strange-but-friendly neighbours.

Here are the details:

  • Peterborough launch: Friday, April 5th at 7:30pm (doors at 7pm) in Bagnani Hall down at Traill College

  • Durham GTA launch (in Oshawa): Monday, April 1st at 6:30pm in Room A115 at the Trent Durham campus in Oshawa.

TUEFRT needs your help!

The Trent University Emergency First Response Team (TUEFRT) is pledging to do CPR for 12 hours straight to raise money for The James Fund, and YOU can help.

Join us on April 5th from 9am to 9pm on Bata Podium and come see how long you can do CPR. You can join by yourself, or come with a team!

Don't know how to do CPR? No problem! We will have TUEFRT members there all day to show you what to do (although unfortunately we can NOT certify you in CPR. We're just giving tips and tricks).

Don't want to commit your skills, but still want to support? You can donate to our GoFundMe page using the Donation Link at the bottom of this email. Every cent helps! All of the proceeds are going to The James Fund, a Peterborough founded cancer fundraising charity. The James Fund is focused on fundraising for neuroblastoma research, and operates out of Sick Kids in Toronto. The James Fund is a non-profit fundraiser, meaning you can be confident that your money is going directly to research and nowhere else.

Not a Trent Student? No problem! We are open to faculty, staff, Peterborough residents and beyond! Bring and tell your friends, family, coworkers, enemies, bus drivers, or anyone else! We'd love to have your support.

Feel free to reach out to tuefrt@trentu.ca with any questions!

Research that makes a difference. Annual celebration of community-based research. Thursday, March 28, 2024, from 12 – 4 at Market Hall, Peterborough. White text over an image of Peterborough downtown clock tower.

The annual celebration of community-based research will be on Thursday, March 28, from 12 -4 at Market Hall, downtown Peterborough. This celebration promises a day filled with knowledge exchange, collaboration, and recognition of outstanding contributions as students share their CBR projects. Reserve your spot today!

And that's all for now... Just kidding, you know we can't end without a toad pun!

The toads are gathered in the Quad potting plants! There are various plants and toads scattered around the picnic tables. One toad says "How can you tell when a plant is scared? It soils itself" another says "I'm making a belt decorated with herbs from my garden. My friends tell me its a waist of thyme." The last toad says "Why shouldn't you tell a secret in a garden? Because the potatoes have eyes and the corn has ears!"
