Hello Hornets!

 

Welcome back to another Diversity, Equity and Inclusion newsletter! This week we have artifacts from “The True Black History Museum” event, Sacramento State will be launching its Black Honors College in the upcoming fall and we highlight 10 Black student-athletes.

Sac State launches Black Success Initiative and Black Honors College

With a decline in Black student enrollment, Black Student Success Task Force will be the first to implement a Black Honors College at Sac State in the fall. Their intent is to provide the space and resources to succeed.

According to CSU enrollment data, Sac State has the highest Black graduation rate in the CSU system.  

“We actually enroll the highest number of Black students in all the CSUs,” Settles-Tidwell said. “That means we are drawing and attracting Black students.”

The True Black History Museum brings over 1,000 ancient artifacts for students to view

The True Black History Museum showcased over 1,000 artifacts dating back to the 1700s highlighting different parts of Black History on Feb.15.  

The traveling museum included artifacts from Muhammad Ali, to signed records by Public Enemy and Aretha Franklin. 

The museum allowed viewers to embrace Black culture while also amplifying Black voices.

Cooper-Woodson College Enhancement centers academic success on Black excellence

The Cooper-Woodson College Enhancement Program specializes in connecting Black students with their Pan-Afro roots through lectures, seminars and events.

This program was started by Otis Scott, Chris Glen and David Covin in 1990, it was designed as a Pan-African Student Retention program to promote educational equity for students.

Showcasing 10 outstanding Black Sac State student-athletes

In honor of Black History Month, Social Media Editor Siany Harts showcases 10 of Sac State’s outstanding Black athletes who display excellence.

Sacramento is made up of a diverse and multicultural community that results inas Sac State’s Athletics Program.

Students like Jared Gipson, Armon Bailey, Solape Amusan and more who were individually recognized for record- breaking achievements for the sports teams they belong to.
