Upcoming Opportunities
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has published NOFOs for the SuRE (PAR-24-144) and SuRE-First (PAR-24-145) R16 grant mechanisms. Notable changes include:

Deadlines
Beginning in 2024, each SuRE R16 grant now has two annual submission deadlines, with the due dates being the same for each. The next due date for both SuRE and Sure-First applications is May 29, 2024. 
  • 2024: May 29 and Sept 27
  • 2025: May 28 and Sept 29
  • 2026: May 27 and Sept 28
PEDP Attachement
The NIH now requires that an attachment called a Plan for Enhancing Diverse Perspective (PEDP) be included with all R16 submissions. This is a summary of strategies to advance the scientific and technical merit of the proposed project through inclusivity. The PEDP is submitted as a one-page "Other Attachment" to be included in grant applications. You may learn more by visiting this NIH page on PEDPs

SuRE Finding & Evaluating Funding Opportunities - Mar 25, 2024, 2-3pm EDT (10-11am AKDT) - Join a review of best practices for finding, vetting, and reading funding opportunities (FOAs) so that you can develop responsive research proposals. While the information you learn will be relevant to all funders, this presentation will emphasize NIH opportunities, specifically the SuRE R16 mechanism. Register here

SuRE Grantsmanship Bootcamp Webinar - April 1-2, 2024, 1-4pm EDT (9-12 AKDT) 
 Join our free two-day grantsmanship training for faculty and research administrative staff leading up to the next SuRE R16 application deadline. Our presenters will focus on key elements of R-series applications and discuss strategies to help you prepare a competitive application. The American Society promotes health advances in the Circumpolar North as part of the International Union for Circumpolar Health, with members in all Arctic nations.

Please join us on Friday, March 29th, with lunch at 12:00 followed by presentations and discussion from 1:00-4:30. Hear the latest on Arctic Health Sciences research and join this informal opportunity to present your work before peers. New investigators and graduate students are encouraged to present. Deadline to sign up to be a presenter is March 22, with a 300 word abstract to apply for a 15-minute oral presentation. Presentations via Zoom are welcome. Poster presentations are also available.

Responsible Conduct of Research Training - March 26, 1-4:30 pm via Zoom  -  Please Note: This training is required of all Alaska INBRE award recipients. This workshop fulfills the NIH and NSF requirements for formal RCR instruction. RCR training covers core norms, principles, regulations, and rules governing the practice of research. RCR is a required training for undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral research supported by NSF and NIH awards. 2024 Summer Immersion Program - May 30-June 1, 2024 in Washington, DC - The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is hosting a 3-day education and training program for students, post-docs, and early career researchers interested in human-based in vitro, in silico, and in chemico methods, OMICS, AI and machine learning technologies to advance biomedical research, improve human health and environmental safety and risk assessment, and reduce and replace animal models. International Congress for Circumpolar Health (ICCH18) - June 18-20, 2024 in Yellowknife, Canada. The ICCH is held every 3-4 years. It is open to anyone interested in circumpolar issues. The ICCH participants include scientists, researchers, health care professionals, policy analysts, government representatives and community leaders. This is a fun, exciting meeting of scientific and cultural exchange with others living and working in the Circumpolar regions.   Details 

15th International Conference on Brain Energy Metabolism (ICBEM) - Sept 17-21, 2024 in Ljubljana, Slovenia:  "Brain Bioenergetics in Aging - Neurovascular and Neurometabolic Coupling and Fuels"This conference brings together leading researchers, clinicians, young scientists, and students interested in brain energy metabolism. IAB Summer Graduate Fellowship Competition - Application Deadline - March 22.  Award amounts up to $10,000 as described in funding opportunity:  Full Proposal Requirements

UAF Troth Yeddha' PhD Fellowship - Apply now through March 22 We are pleased to announce a new opportunity: the UAF Troth Yeddha’ PhD Fellowship, with funding available to support a limited number of PhD students over the upcoming year (through Spring 2025) and starting May12th. These fellowships are eligible to currently enrolled PhD students and to Masters students transitioning into UAF PhD programs in Fall 2024. They are being offered as part of UAF’s effort to attain R1 status in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education by 2027. Students and their advisor will both have to fill out an application for the Fellowship.
