PBUUC Sunday Worship Service
March 3, 2024 at 3:00 pm

Held at:
University Christian Church
6800 Adelphi Road
Hyattsville, MD
(In-Person & on Zoom)

Intersectionality

Elizabeth Ann Terry
with
Worship Associate Lula Beatty

Prophet Audre Lorde shared with us: “There is no such thing as a single issue struggle, because we do not lead single-issue lives.” If oppression is intersectional, how can our Unitarian Universalist faith call us to explore and act upon intersectional solutions to oppression?

Singers Needed To Lead Two Hymns This Sunday, March 3

Rehearse At 2:00 PM Sing At 3:00 PM

In honor of Women’s History Month, all the music for the March 3 Service is written, composed, and performed by women.

The two congregational hymns, #1008, When Our Heart Is In A Holy Place by Joyce Poley and #1022, Open The Window by Elise Witt, have tricky rhythms, so we are recruiting a group of people who can gather at the piano at 2:00 pm this Sunday to go over the hymns and then become part of the congregation to help us sing them with confidence.  Meet at the piano at 2:00 pm.  The hymnals will already be there.
If you have got questions or need more information, contact Worship Associate Carol Carter Walker at carolcarterwalker@earthlink.net

Mission Discernment Team
March 1, 2024

Dear PBUUC Members and Friends,

Today, I am writing to share with you the next step of the mission discernment process.

Many of us gathered in small groups for five weeks to reflect on the following:

Week One: What has the experience of being in this church over the last 6-12 months been like for you?

Week Two: Please share 1-3 specific instances of people here relating to each other (words and/or actions) that you directly experienced or witnessed that either: (a) Made you proud to be part of this congregation; or   (b) Distressed, troubled or negatively impacted you.  For each please share (a) the impact on you and (b) what this says to you about the culture of this church.

Week Three: Please share 1-3 specific instances of people here relating to each other (words and/or actions) that you directly experienced or witnessed that either: (a) Made you proud to be part of this congregation; or (b) Distressed, troubled or negatively impacted you. For each please share (a) the impact on you and (b) what this says to you about the culture of this church.

Week Four: Please give 1-3 examples that illustrate how we want to be with each other. For each, please share: (a) what happens and (b) what this example would say about this community. Also (optionally) any barriers that you note to this event happening in this way.
Week Five: How do we develop, encourage, and maintain this way of being together? (in other words how do we act on this aspect of our mission). What are the barriers? What are our strengths? What specific actions can we take that support this kind of individual and collective practice?

Share one example of what personal accountability, boundary setting or relationship repair would ideally look like in this church 5b. Share one concrete suggestion for something we can do as a congregation that would help us get to a place where that response is more likely.

Members and friends have reported that the conversations were rich and meaningful. During each session, the facilitators took notes. We are sharing with you in a document that the mission discernment team has compiled.

The notes were edited and randomized to maintain the anonymity of the group members. Otherwise this document has not been edited. These comments represent individual perspectives and may include factual errors, but we felt it was important to share the responses as we received them.

The document is lengthy; we are currently working to create a more manageable summary of the responses, as well as to extract recurring themes, and we will share those as soon as we have them.

To access the document, please send an email to missionteam@pbuuc.org We will send a link to the notes. We are using this process to limit access by those who are not members and friends of Paint Branch.

We hope this information will spur other deep conversations.  The mission team is considering next steps, which could include other small group opportunities, further mission discernment work, formal covenanting work, or specific actions or programming based on the recurring themes in these responses.  We will share more, and seek congregational input, after all these responses have been processed.

Thank you to all who participated!!

All the best,

Your Mission Discernment Team
Leo, Tricia, Mary and Rev. Ann

See you in church!

PBUUC Family;

We wanted to remind you that your Ministerial Search Committee is holding a Listening Session on Sunday on Zoom at 10am. HERE is the link.

We will be telling you about the process, reviewing the mini-survey results, and getting your input into our decision making process. To get started in your thinking, take a look at the word cloud below which summarizes your responses to the mini-survey that asked you to what qualities you would lie to see in our new minister.

We look forward to collaborating with you,
Abby Crowley, Board Liaison, Ministerial Search Committee

SPIRITUALITY CIRCLE

Spirituality Circle meets on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month at 11.

Spirituality Circle is one of the many ways we come together at Paint Branch to find, develop and enhance our sense of belonging in community. It’s about encouragement and curious exploration of a variety of spiritual practices that connect us with the sacred. We support each other in our individual challenges and pursuits.

We are using a curriculum called “Faith Forward” again. In this series we are introduced to and asked to “try on” many different spiritual practices. We are asked to ‘keep an open mind and see what comes up for you’. Our bodies and minds mature. The same is true of our spirits. Practices that may not have served us well at one point in our lives, may serve you now. We are encouraged to approach these practices with “new eyes” and a sense of curiosity.

Our next meeting will be March 10thth when we will move on to Session 6 “Mindful Eating”. Attending previous sessions is not necessary for attending any session but if you want information about them you are encouraged to look at the Handouts available below.

UUA Statement Condemns Violence Against Gaza and Urges Ceasefire

This is a terrifying moment for our fragile world. As Unitarian Universalists, we share a belief that every human life is sacred, with no person more deserving of freedom and flourishing than any other. This is why it was critical that your Unitarian Universalist Association has reaffirmed our condemnation of the Israeli military’s ongoing violence against Gaza and join again with the growing chorus of voices across the globe urging immediate and total ceasefire.

Social Justice Task Force Recruiting

Paint Branch has a rich history of making a difference in our communities through spirited engagement and direct action.   On our new church journey, it is a good time to review and develop a plan for how we will live our principles through social and political action and community engagement. Consider becoming part of the Social Justice Task Force that will make recommendations for how we will support social justice as a congregation.   Please contact Lula Beatty (lulabeatty@verizon.net) if you are interested in joining this group.  Thanks!

PBUUC Music Exploration

Greetings PBUUC!

Some of you know that the Music Task Force has been meeting regularly since November to consider music at Paint Branch and dream what it will be in the future. Bailey Whiteman, a singer, former music director, active Unitarian Universalist, and consultant, has been helping us frame questions to guide our work. We’re also facilitating music experiments to help us get creative, and enjoy some new musicians, styles, and ways to engage. What we’d love is feedback from you! Over the coming weeks, there will be cards available for you to share your thoughts and answer one or two questions about music at Paint Branch that day and more generally.

Please engage with us! Fill out the cards, email us at musictaskforce@pbuuc.org, and respond to requests you’ll see in the ContinUUm, from the pulpit, and through direct outreach. We want to hear from everyone so that we can lean into the opportunity to envision music at PBUUC.

Harmoniously,

The Music Task Force

Kathy Bartolomeo, Jim Flaherty, Jeanne Judd, & Mary Rooker

Visiting Steward Recruiting is Happening
—EMBRACING OUR COMMUNITY!

We are approaching the Stewardship Campaign for the 2024-2025 church year, and we need helpers!  Would you like to be part of this important activity?  The time commitment is low (attend training (1.5 hours) and contact no more than five people (over a 6-week period), and the work is vital to our community.  Please contact Kathi Yu (kathiyu@gmail.com) or Liz Citrin (liz.citrin@gmail.com) to volunteer or if you want a little more information.  Thank you.

Paint Branch offers several forms of caring support for congregants:
Rev. Ann is available for pastoral visits and phone calls: 301-937-3667 or minister@pbuuc.org.

The “We Care” Team offers assistance: If you or someone you know would appreciate one of these supports, please be in touch with us at any of the emails above.
And if you would like to offer to help in one of these areas, please let any of us know!
