Welcome to the first edition of the Colorado research program on Vaping, E-cigarettes, Nicotine and Tobacco (C-VENT) newsletter. We are building C-VENT as a research program that aims to bring together people conducting diverse research on nicotine, tobacco and vaping around our institution. We hope to create communications and build community among colleagues in diverse disciplines who are studying tobacco, nicotine and vaping. The goal of this community building is to lay the groundwork for collaboration and identify needed resources that will support multidisciplinary research, extramural project or center grants, or possibly  develop into a Center in the future.  This newsletter is our very first step towards this goal. We hope it generates networking by highlighting the research on nicotine and tobacco happening at University of Colorado. Our next step will be a retreat this summer to bring people together to discuss a shared mission and identify multidisciplinary collaboration opportunities. If you are receiving this it is because I have met with you in my efforts to learn about the tobacco, nicotine and vaping research happening here or because we have found your work on these topics in our searches of publications, grants or other networking efforts. Please let us know if others in your research teams should be added to our list.

We hope that through this newsletter you learn about research or potential collaborators that you didn’t previously know about and that you consider joining the retreat this summer.

Gina Kruse MD, MS, MPH

Visiting Associate Professor of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine

University of Colorado School of Medicine

Our inaugural Investigator Spotlight is Dr. Christina Sun from the School of Nursing. She is leading an R34 study funded by NIDA: Proud to Quit (P2Q): A Person-centered mobile technology intervention for smoking cessation among transgender adults.

In this project she and her team aim to develop and pilot test an mHealth smoking cessation intervention for transgender adults: Proud to Quit (P2Q). P2Q will provide tailored messages, peer social support, and self-monitoring features. They will develop P2Q by collaborating with an Intervention Advisory Workgroup comprising of transgender adults and providers of gender affirming health care, and implement iterative intervention design processes and usability testing. Through a remote pilot randomized controlled trial, they will assess acceptability and feasibility of an mHealth smoking-cessation intervention for transgender adults as well as its preliminary efficacy using self-report and objective biomarker data.  The project will offer a new tool to address tobacco use in this disproportionately affected population and reach transgender adults in diverse locations to reduce tobacco-related health disparities among transgender adults.

RFA-OD-23-017 Tobacco Regulatory Science (R01 Clinical Trial Optional)

The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to invite R01 applications to support biomedical and behavioral research that will provide scientific data to inform regulation of tobacco products to protect public health. Research Projects must address the research priorities related to the regulatory authority of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Centerfor Tobacco Products (CTP). The awards under this NOFO will be administered by NIH using funds that have been made available through FDA CTP and the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (P.L. 111-31). Research results from this NOFO are expected to generate findings and data that are directly relevant in informing the FDA's regulation of the manufacture, distribution, and marketing of tobacco products to protect public health.
