Insights from IR: March 2024

This month’s Insights from IR highlights a series of reports and new dashboard tools to further our efforts to Advance Equity Through Inquiry by better representing our students’ rich cultural backgrounds. Read on to learn more!

As of Fall 2022, the CSU system allows applicants to indicate that they identify as Southwest Asian/North African (SWANA), which used to be included with the “White” race group. Among the Fall 2023 new students, 68 first-time freshmen, 50 transfers, and 11 graduate students identified as SWANA, the majority of whom are of Armenian heritage (45%). Inside Counts now has a new section, Deep Dive Reports, where, as the name implies, we are diving more deeply into key data issues to understand them more fully. We are debuting this section with a series of reports in which we share insights related to more detailed race/ethnicity data. In these reports we examine the enrollment and preferred identities of our Black/African American students and the enrollment and outcomes for our Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) and Latinx students disaggregated to national origin groups.

Did you know that APIDA students of Tongan, Laotian, and Khmer heritage have among the highest rates of first-generation college background at the university? Did you know that, among Latinx first-time freshmen, 4-year graduation rates are highest among students of Caribbean heritage? Did you know that students who indicate that they identify as both Black and Latinx are grouped as Latinx for federal reporting purposes?

We’re excited to announce new data tools in CSUN Counts that allow you to explore the kinds of data breakdowns discussed in our Deep Dive Reports yourselves! Our Student Characteristics dashboards now allow you to: 1) explore variations by national/regional origin groups within the traditionally-reported racial/ethnic groups; and 2) view racial/ethnic breakdowns by traditionally-reported classifications (“IPEDS Ethnicity”) or by students’ preferred identity (“Preferred Ethnicity”).

These features have debuted in our All Student Characteristics and New Student Characteristics dashboards, and we plan to roll them out to our other dashboards shortly. Learn more about these options by clicking on the Help (question mark) button on these dashboards to view the Information tab.

Our new pilot program called Championing Our Racial Equity (CORE) @ CSUN launched this Spring. Instructors are signing up and earning points by learning about equity data and equity-minded pedagogy.
