SFSU SWE x SWE GGS mentorship program

Are you interested in being a mentor to collegiate students? Apply to be a mentor for the SFSU SWE x Golden Gate Section SWE Mentorship Program! During this program, you will be paired up with a mentee and have the opportunity to provide relevant professional guidance to your mentee. This program will include monthly virtual meet-ups between you and your mentee, as well as the option to attend in-person events for all program participants. The time commitment is flexible, but it is suggested that you meet with your mentee virtually for at least 30 minutes 1-2 times a month, from April to May 2024. If you are interested, please fill out this form by Wednesday, March 20th. If you have any questions, please reach out to Allison at anguyen5102@gmail.com.

Stratus Admissions x SWE

Join Melisa Prevost and Donna Bauman, both Senior Admissions Counselors with Stratus Admissions, to learn about why engineers might consider business school or a masters in management. They will talk about how engineers might leverage an MBA or MiM, the different ways to get an MBA/MiM and share some profiles of female engineers we have worked with and how they leveraged their business degrees. They hope to make this interactive and answer questions as well as provide a foundation of what you can be thinking about whether you are still studying or currently working as an engineer.

When: Tuesday, March 12th, 6:00 to 7:00 PM
Where: Online
RSVP: Here

SWE GGS 2024 Scholarship Application Launch

The SWE Golden Gate Section 2024 scholarship application is open! Each year, SWE-GGS awards a number of scholarships to young Bay Area students graduating from high school and going on to pursue degrees in engineering and other related fields. Applications will be accepted until Friday, April 12th. To find more information and apply click here.

Volunteers needed for SWE GGS Scholarship Evaluation Committee

We are looking for volunteers for our scholarship evaluation committee. The role of the scholarship committee is to provide feedback and support to our SWE GGS scholarship program which runs from January through May.

Tasks include:

  • Reviewing the scholarship application and timeline before it opens to ensure it is all correct and as fair as possible
  • Evaluating scholarship applications submitted by high school or community college students and selecting the award recipients and scholarship amounts
  • Reaching out to your employer and other companies to solicit corporate donations for the scholarship fund
  • Helping plan or host fundraising events for the scholarship fund
  • Helping plan the scholarship awards banquet which will happen in May

In FY23, we awarded 8 scholarships totaling $11,000 to graduating high school students going on to pursue degrees in engineering and computer science. We would love to exceed those numbers this year!

Being a committee member is a low time commitment position. We will have periodic committee meetings (probably every 2 weeks until May) with action items that will need to be addressed between meetings for those who want to take on a larger role. Please express your interest here. If you have any questions, you can reach out to Sawyer Thompson at sweggs.scholarship@gmail.com.

UCB SWE x Industry mentorship program

The UCB SWE x Industry Mentorship Program pairs industry professionals with UCB SWE members interested in the industry. Pairs meet virtually at least once a month so the student connects with and receives help from an industry guide. The program lasts for an academic semester (February to May). The program's purpose is to connect students with someone in their field of interest in the industry. Throughout the mentorship, the mentee guides every meeting with questions, seeking career-related advice, discussion, and support. The registration form to sign-up and be a mentor is here. More information regarding the timeline and commitment requirements can be found here. The deadline to register is March 11th.

Women in ASHRAE Breakfast and Panel

The upcoming Women in ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) Breakfast Panel promises to be an inspiring event, bringing together industry leaders for a dynamic discussion on diverse experiences in the built environment industry. Panelists Sara Ambry, Anna Levitt, and Cassidy Thompson will share their journeys navigating the industry, how they found their current success, and advice for others. Moderated by Lyn Gomes, the event will emphasize the importance of perseverance, creativity, and leadership in fostering a more inclusive industry. Attendees will leave inspired and empowered to effect positive change, committed to building a brighter, more equitable future for all in ASHRAE and built environment field. Register here.

When: Friday, March 15th, 8:00 to 10:00 AM
Where: 221 Main Street, San Francisco
RSVP: Here
