A News Source for Friends of Duke Urology  •  Winter 2023
Message from the Chair

I trust this message finds you well and in good spirits. Winter has been delightful for me, filled with unexpected joys and exciting sports moments. As some of you might know, I've long been a die-hard Wolverine, but I'm swiftly embracing my newfound enthusiasm for Duke Blue Devil sports. This winter brought a particularly memorable highlight—witnessing Michigan secure the College Football Championship. It was a momentous event that I never thought I'd see in my lifetime. Although I had initially planned to attend the Rose Bowl to watch Michigan face off against Alabama, my track record at Rose Bowl games stood at 0-4. In the interest of the team's success, I decided to break with tradition and cheer them on from the comfort of home. The same approach held true for the championship game in Houston. While there's a twinge of regret for not being there in person, the joy of witnessing Michigan's victory from a distance was immensely satisfying.

It was clear that one of the reasons this particular team was so successful was the respect that each player and coach had for one another. In fact, they collectively chanted “respect!” after winning an earlier season game this year. Whether in the realm of sports, or in the complexities of business, or within our dedicated department such as ours, respect is the cornerstone of building both a harmonious and high-performing team. The mutual regard and genuine consideration that I see extended to one another within our department has created a nurturing environment where individuals seem to thrive.

Ultimately, I believe the cultivation of respect amongst my Duke Urology "teammates" whether they be faculty, residents, fellows, APP's or administrative staff, transforms our team culture into a positive and empowering force. That is why Respect is one of our five guiding principles of our Department and not just a checklist of behaviors. I believe it is a fundamental value that elevates our collective spirit, nurtures collaboration, and propels our ability to navigate challenges and achieve success together. As we transition into the spring season, I want to express my appreciation for each of you and the unique contributions you bring to our department. Here's to the triumphs of our department, our favorite teams, and the shared camaraderie that sports bring. Wishing you all continued enjoyment and success in the coming months.

RESPECT!

Gary J. Faerber

DR. LENAINE WESTNEY GIVES 2024 VICTOR POLITANO LECTURE
O. Lenaine Wesney MD FACS UPRS, Professor of Urology and Urinary Tract and Pelvic Reconstruction Fellowship Director at MD Anderson Cancer Center at the McGovern Medical School at University of Texas-Houston was the 2024 Victor Politano Lecturer. (Little known trivia fact – Dr. John McGovern whose foundation endowed her medical school attended Duke for college and medical school.) Her featured lecture on February 9 was titled “Management and Prevention of Urologic Complications in Non-Genito-urinary Malignancies.” The day prior, she spoke to the Department on “Women in Academic Urology: Successes and Opportunities.”  Dr. Wesney is a pioneer and one of only four African-American female full professors of urology in the US.
