Hello Hornets!

February has ended, but Sacramento State sports never ends. Last week, spring sport teams had up and down performances, men’s basketball snapped a losing streak and women’s basketball senior day ended sourly.

Sacramento State baseball had four games this week against Fresno State and UC Santa Barbara where the Hornets broke even going 2-2.

The Hornets beat the Bulldogs with back-to-back-to-back home runs which hasn’t happened since 2007. Sac State took a convincing lead for a win 8-6 on Feb. 21, 2024.

Sac State then had a three-game series starting on Feb. 23, 2024 against Santa Barbara going 1-2, due to low-scoring output by the Hornets.

Over the last week and a half, Sacramento State Softball has traveled all the way to New Mexico, followed by Santa Barbara for their latest tournament. They played eight total games with four wins and four losses, coming away with a 7-5 overall record.

The Hornets started strong with back-to-back wins against North Dakota on Friday, Feb. 8, in the Troy Cox Classic. In game one they triggered the mercy rule for the second time this season, capping the game at six innings with an 8-0 score.

Senior Day was spoiled for senior forward Solape Amusan and the Sacramento State women’s basketball team after a hard-fought 55-51 loss to the Montana State Bobcats in their home finale at The Nest on Feb. 24, 2024.

Amusan said her last two years with Sac State have been the best years of her life.

“This game meant a lot. It’s been a journey to get here,” Amusan said. “I wanted a win for our program, but I think we’re moving in the right direction.”

Sacramento State took flight to Montana with their sights set on two chances to snap a 10-game losing streak, although the Hornets pushed that skid to 11 after a close game, they made the trip worthwhile.

On Feb. 22, 2024, in the first of those opportunities against the Montana Grizzlies, the Hornets flirted with an upset but couldn’t seal the deal, losing 68-61.

It took two games, but Sac State found a way in The Treasure State, topping Montana State 66-63, for their first conference road win of the year and snapping their 11-game dry spell.
