Story Time with Steph

Hello Good Humans of Lady Eaton college!

I hope this Monday newsletter finds you having had a good weekend. I’m feeling compelled to share how deliciously full of joyful spotlights (literally at times!) mine has been, as it was filled with Lady Eaton joy.

Friday was International Women’s Day and as we do here at LEC, we celebrated! The panel of speakers were such the celebration of women’s day, in such complex ways that even though I had been privy to the planning, I left that time together so filled with inspiration and an expansion of this human experience. Also, the reminder that it’s so very important to pay attention to the voices not always at the table, and in particular, the voices using “I” statements to make their way forward in a world that isn’t set up for the successes of truly everyone, and ask what we can do to make space.

The learning and deep benefits to the world around us when we are open to learn from experiences of others and then to take our learning out into this shared world, wiser, and held in an international experiential way, empowered to help create space for more balance. All THIS and Bridget’s (catered by By The Bridge) curried chickpeas (My Roman Empire)!! The conversations following over this wonderful lunch- filled me up even more than the Chickpeas! Thank you to everyone who joined us and added your voices and minds to this event.
LEC WHAT!? LEC this, for sure!

On Sunday, I caught the Anne Shirley Theatre Company in their rendition of Catch Me If You Can-
It was so very wonderfully done! Annnnnd I was a bit overwhelmed with pride in SO Many LEC students giving their all there, and so powerfully. A toadally huge standing ovation for each of you! I highly recommend checking it out if you are able to get tickets.

May this week be filled with moments that lift you up and propel you forward.
You’ve got this! And we are cheering you on in the College office, too.

Academic Advising

How to book an advising appointment online

Academic Advising Appointments are available to book online through the Student Experience Portal.

  • Sign into the Student Experience Portal with your Trent username and password.

  • Click on “Book Appointments” in the left menu to get started.

  • Select 'view calendar' to see the next available appointment or select 'book by provider' to search for available appointments by Academic Advisor.

  • Select time slot and complete the form.

  • A confirmation email with the appointment details will be sent to you along with a reminder email. If you need to cancel your appointment, please do so by following the links provided in the emails.

  • If you have difficulty using the online booking system you can call the academic advising phone line at (answered by trained, upper-year student staff) 705-748-1011 ext. 7333 for assistance.

You will be able to see appointments up to two weeks away on the Student Experience Portal. Appointments often book up once they become available, so if you do not see anything available (e.g., the calendar is blank) or the availability does not work with your schedule, you can check back the following day after 9:00am EST. Sometimes cancelations do occur, which also means that sometimes appointments that are available sooner might also appear in the portal.

Academic Skills

Academic Skills How-to-Guides

Did you know Academic Skills has guides for writing, citing, and learning? There are many resources available to explore, and I want to highlight two that often come in handy around this time of the term.

First, our How-to-Write Guide covers almost any university assignment you can think of: essays, lab reports, annotated bibliographies, reflections, article summaries and more! Find steps, examples, and tips to help you write your assignments.

Second, our Documentation Guide outlines the most common citation styles and discipline-specific styles. You’ll find examples for how to write in-text citations, footnotes, references, bibliographies, and works cited entries for different types of sources. Not sure how to write a reference for a journal article? Find examples to follow here!

Toad-ally Top Three

Hello friends!

I’m happy to report that we are three quarters of the way through classes for this semester! I know this is a super heavy time in the year for many, as we head in to final assignments and exams. This week I want to make some recommendations for everyone’s favourite relaxation (*cough* procrastination) activity… binge watching shows on Netflix!

  1. Downton Abbey- I will never stop recommending this show to people! There is nothing more relaxing than escaping into the world of pleasant British accents and aristocratic drama!

  2. Queer Eye- This one can be a little emotional at times, but overall it’s pretty feel-good! It’s funny while also giving some seriously good tips to improve your self-image, what more could you want!

  3. Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency- I feel like I need to put this one here because it’s so good but somehow no one’s ever heard of it! It’s an amazing quirky mystery based on a novel by Douglas Adams (that guy who wrote Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy).

I hope these help you enjoy some much needed breaks, but to put on my Responsible Student Leader hat, if you are struggling to manage your workload you should absolutely check out the resources on the Academic Skills website or make an appointment!

Musings on Music

What reminds you of your childhood? Definitely, some boy band that a 9-year-old would not know about, and that’s when you know you are old. Oh, hey Melissa, when I was your age, girls would go crazy for One Direction! What’s that aunt, a clothes brand? Isn’t it wild how babies are being born right now? In this instance, imagine being born in 2024; that’s scary. What kind of world these babies would live in? A world without One Direction and the Jonas Brothers, surrounded by despair, really. The first CD that my mom got me was the iCarly theme songs; she gave me her portable CD player, and ever since then, I have loved CDs. So today, I present some songs from movies and TV shows from when we were kids or just pop songs that we could have listened to on the radio.

- Burnin’ Up, Jonas Brothers

- Lovebug, Jonas Brothers

- Ready or Not, Bridgit Mendler

- Boyfriend, Justin Bieber

- Shake It Off, Taylor Swift

- Surf’s Up, Teen Beach Movie Cast

- This is Me, Demi Lovato & Joe Jonas

- I Don’t Dance, CHAD, Ryan & Disney

- Get’cha Head In The Game, Troy & Disney

- He Could Be the One, Hannah Montana

- Leave It All To Me, Miranda Cosgrove & Drake Bell

- Drag Me Down, One Direction

- What Makes You Beautiful, One Direction

Let it rip,

AQ

Bookish Babbles

Happy Monday LEC!

The sun is finally starting to shine which means it is almost spring! This is my absolute favourite season so today I want to recommend a book that feels like spring. Maybe its because I first read this book in spring or maybe its the story of self discovery - either way this book is a must-read for this time of year!

Recommendation: Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston! LGBT+ romance! Royalty and politics! This humorous yet heartwarming story follows a romance between the First Son of The United States and the Prince of England!
