APRIL 2024 NEWSLETTER
A Word from our Chief Executive Officer, Mark A. Smith
“You’re invited!” The MVAA would not exist if the families, artists, and donor supporters were not there. Well, we would like to say thanks! On April 20 and 21, the MVAA Daley Center will host an open house to celebrate and dedicate the Peter J. Daley Cultural Center in downtown Brownsville. It’s been a year since acquiring the former American Legion Post 295, and what a year it’s been. New paint, new furnishings, up-to-date practice rooms, and even a stairlift has been installed. The festivities are open to the public and will showcase the young and mature talent walking through the doors. Each day begins at 1 p.m. and will conclude at 4. You’re invited to share the excitement. We hope to see you there.
MVAA South Anniversary Bash

The MVAA “Anniversary Bash” will be a two-day celebration of the eighth year of artistry and talent from the entire Tri-County area. Building on the vision of the late Rep. Peter J. Daley and the Maestro Joe Campus, the MVAA Board of Directors will dedicate the newly remodeled Cultural Center in the thriving downtown business center of Brownsville. Musicians and artists, ranging from young to mature, will showcase the various talents and skills developed while attending classes and instruction at the Center. Admission is free daily with dedications at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, and Sunday, April 21.

Parking is free. Light refreshments will be served, along with information on sponsoring or donating to the most active 501©3 non-profit, #81-2606302. For information and details, call 724-565-1687 or email info@monvalleyacademyforthearts.org

Student of the Month: Evan Lee

Evan Lee is a 7th grader in the Brownsville Area School District. A talented trumpet player, Evan stepped in with the TC Jr. Stage Band a few weeks ago and will play trumpet in the upcoming concert. He also plays in the marching band, jazz band, and the Sam Bill Legacy Band. One not to shy away from soloing, when asked for a solo trumpet feature, Evan stepped up first to feature during the “Big Cuppa Joe” selection.

Welcome aboard, Evan, and see you on the bandstand!

MVAA Celebrates Catherine Moran

Mon Valley Academy for the Arts (MVAA) proudly announces that Catherine Moran, a dedicated academy member, has been accepted into the prestigious Great American Marching Band for the upcoming Macy's Thanksgiving Parade. You can read more about her accomplishment in this article from the Observer-Reporter.

Catherine Moran, affectionately known as Caty, has demonstrated exceptional talent and commitment as an active participant in MVAA's performance groups, including the TC Junior Stage Band, Regimental Fife & Drum Unit, Sam Bill Legacy Band, and Voicez on Fire. Under the guidance of instructors Marissa McFerrin, Evan Kovach, and Carla Dellapenna, Caty has honed her skills and emerged as a leading figure in our musical community.

The Great American Marching Band, composed of 185 high school students from across the nation, occupies a position of honor among the parade's highlights, including gigantic helium balloons, impressive floats, and celebrities. As the band steps off from Central Park, Caty and her fellow musicians will be greeted by 3.5 million spectators along the parade route and millions more watching the live broadcast on NBC. This performance in front of celebrity hosts, a grandstand audience, and more than 50 million TV viewers represents a remarkable achievement for Caty and a moment of pride for the Mon Valley Academy for the Arts.

MVAA President Annette Buffer expressed her excitement and support: "We are incredibly proud of Caty's achievement. Her selection for the Great American Marching Band at the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade is a testament to her dedication, talent, and the supportive environment we strive to provide at MVAA. We encourage everyone to tune in and support Caty and the Great American Marching Band. This achievement is not just a personal milestone for Caty but a shining example of what our students can accomplish with passion and hard work."

The Mon Valley Academy for the Arts continues to offer affordable, high-quality instruction on most musical instruments for all ages, fostering the growth of talented musicians like Catherine Moran.

Announcing New TC Jr. Stage Band Directors
Mon Valley Academy for the Arts (MVAA) announces the appointment of two distinguished musicians, "CJ" Rhen and Benjamin McFarren, as the new directors of the 2024 TC Jr. Band. These appointments mark a significant milestone in the continuation and growth of the TC Jr. Band's legacy under the MVAA's stewardship.

"CJ" Rhen, stepping into the role of Director, brings a rich background as a composer, trumpet, and saxophone player. CJ's journey from a student player in the TC Jr. Band to its Director is a testament to the nurturing environment and high standards of excellence upheld by MVAA. With a portfolio that includes composing for big bands, orchestras, string quartets, film, and other media, CJ's expertise in sound design and live performances across the East Coast will inject a fresh and innovative spirit into the band. CJ's appointment as the eighth-generation director of the Twin Coaches Jr. Stage Band is a moment of pride for MVAA and a tribute to the late Maestro Joe's legacy.

Joining CJ in leading the TC Jr. Band is Benjamin McFarren, an educator and saxophonist with an impressive jazz and classical music background. Originally from Western New York, Ben's academic journey through Mansfield University of Pennsylvania and West Virginia University has been decorated with numerous scholarships, grants, and awards. His role as the assistant band director at Brownsville Area High School and his leadership in the Brownsville Area School Jazz Ensemble underscore his commitment to music education and performance. As an assistant director of the Junior Stage Band, Ben's vision aligns with MVAA's mission to nurture young talent and promote musical excellence.

MVAA President Annette Buffer expressed her enthusiasm for the new appointments, stating, "We are excited to welcome CJ and Ben to their new roles within the TC Jr. Band. Their passion for music and impressive backgrounds promise an exciting future for our young musicians. We are confident that the TC Jr. Band will continue to thrive and inspire our community under their guidance."

The Mon Valley Academy for the Arts invites the community to support CJ, Ben, and the talented members of the TC Jr. Band as they embark on this new chapter. MVAA remains committed to offering affordable, high-quality musical instruction and enriching the cultural landscape of the Mon Valley through its diverse programs and events.
