Hello Hornets!

Welcome back! We hope that you had an amazing spring break. In this week's Arts and Entertainment newsletter we highlight the Sacramento State Vivarium, a new Back to the 80s piece, Black country artists and Lola’s Lounge.

From the deserts of Australia to the Amazon rainforest, the Vivarium at Sacramento State has creatures that walk, crawl and slither for students to discover in Sequoia Hall, Room 110.

The Vivarium has over 25 species of reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates on display, including a blue-tongued skink, dart frogs and tarantulas with a passionate team of student volunteers ready to welcome guests to explore the space.

If you want to foster your appreciation for the natural world and support a cool feature on campus, the Vivarium is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Back to the 80s: ‘Flash Dance’

The 1983 film “Flashdance” is a poor portrayal of the 80s niche of dancing-themed movies. (Graphic created in Canva by Alyssa Branum and photo courtesy of Paramount Pictures)

Films with toe tapping beats, intensely choreographed dance numbers and preppy music were all staples to the 80s, but a film that takes dance and hard work to a whole new level is the 1983 movie “Flashdance.”

“Flashdance” is a film that follows 18-year-old steel worker Alex through her life as she takes her passion for dancing into a new light. In the beginning, Alex is seen performing nightly at a dancing bar.

The movie “Flashdance” is one that by today’s standards is a laughable representation of dance and romance films.

Black artists in country music: Beyoncé and beyond

Hidden in archives of the country music genre are some of the most musically talented Black artists who have significantly impacted the genre since its inception.

Artists like Ray Charles, Lesley Riddle, Jessie Mae Hemphill and Charley Pride among others have paved the way for modern Black country musicians like Darius Rucker, The War and Treaty and Beyoncé to take charge and diversify a white musician dominated genre.

To learn more about the Black roots in country music, tune into these artists’ historical contributions.
